What does a cloud engineering manager do?

A Cloud Engineering Manager leads a team responsible for designing, building, and managing cloud infrastructure and services. They oversee cloud projects, ensure best practices in cloud security and scalability, and collaborate with other teams to align cloud solutions with business goals. In addition to technical leadership, they also handle team development, project management, and resource allocation. Their role bridges technical expertise with strategic management to ensure efficient cloud operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud engineering manager?

To thrive as a Cloud Engineering Manager, you need deep expertise in cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), strong leadership abilities, and experience in system architecture and software engineering, often supported by a relevant degree and cloud certifications. Familiarity with cloud orchestration tools, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform), and security best practices is essential. Outstanding communication, strategic thinking, and team management skills help foster collaboration and drive project success. These skills ensure efficient cloud operations, secure and scalable solutions, and high-performing teams in dynamic technical environments.

How does a cloud engineering manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership and team management responsibilities?

As a Cloud Engineering Manager, you'll often split your time between overseeing technical projects and supporting your team's growth and performance. While you may still engage in architectural decisions and complex problem-solving, much of your role will involve mentoring engineers, coordinating with other departments, and ensuring projects are delivered on time. Striking this balance means being adaptable—knowing when to step in technically and when to delegate. This leadership approach helps foster both innovation and a collaborative, high-performing team environment.

What is the difference between Cloud Engineering Manager vs Cloud Solutions Architect?

AspectCloud Engineering ManagerCloud Solutions Architect

Work EnvironmentTeam management, project oversight, strategic planningDesigning cloud solutions, client interaction, technical implementation
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, enterprises managing cloud infrastructureConsulting firms, cloud service providers, large enterprises

The Cloud Engineering Manager oversees cloud teams and projects, focusing on management and strategy. In contrast, the Cloud Solutions Architect designs cloud solutions and ensures technical alignment. Both roles require cloud certifications and industry experience but differ in focus—management versus technical architecture.

  • Architects and implements disaster recovery, high availability, backup, and fault-tolerance approaches to improve service continuity and recoverability.

  • Implements and reinforces cloud security best practices, including identity and access management, network segmentation, encryption, and key management.

  • Drives adoption of infrastructure as code and automation using Terraform and related tooling, and advances CI/CD best practices that improve consistency and speed of delivery.

  • Oversees and improves cloud vulnerability management and configuration compliance efforts to help ensure patching and hardening activities meet service expectations.

  • Designs and enhances observability solutions for cloud infrastructure and distributed systems, including logging, metrics, dashboards, tracing, and alerting.

  • Provides technical leadership in defining delivery plans, sequencing work, shaping backlogs, and following through on design and build activities through production delivery.

  • Creates and maintains clear technical documentation, standards, and implementation guidance for cloud infrastructure, services, and operational procedures.

  • Mentors engineers and shares expertise to raise engineering quality, strengthen technical decision-making, and improve execution across teams.

  • Supports the company's commitment to risk management and protecting the integrity and confidentiality of systems and data.
