What is a Cloud DevSecOps Engineer?

A Cloud DevSecOps Engineer is a professional who integrates security practices into the DevOps process within cloud environments. They are responsible for automating security measures, ensuring compliance, and identifying vulnerabilities during the development, deployment, and operation of cloud-based applications. Their work bridges the gap between development, operations, and security teams, helping organizations deliver secure, scalable, and resilient applications in the cloud. Typical tasks include implementing security tools, monitoring cloud infrastructure, and responding to security incidents. The role requires a strong understanding of cloud platforms, security frameworks, and automation tools.

What does a Cloud DevSecOps Engineer do?

A Cloud DevSecOps Engineer works closely with development and operations teams to embed security practices at every stage of the software delivery process. This often involves participating in code reviews, automating security scans within CI/CD pipelines, and advising on secure cloud architecture. They serve as a bridge between security and engineering, ensuring that security controls are integrated early and continuously. This collaborative approach fosters a culture of shared responsibility, helping teams deliver secure, high-quality applications more efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cloud DevSecOps Engineer?

To thrive as a Cloud DevSecOps Engineer, you need a solid background in cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), infrastructure as code, automation, and security best practices, often backed by a relevant degree and certifications like AWS Certified Security or CompTIA Security+. Familiarity with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, GitLab), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and security scanning tools (like Snyk or Aqua) is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate across development, operations, and security teams are crucial soft skills. These abilities ensure the secure, efficient, and scalable delivery of cloud-native applications by integrating security into every step of the development lifecycle.

What is the difference between Cloud Devsecops Engineer vs Cloud Security Engineer?

AspectCloud Devsecops EngineerCloud Security Engineer
Primary FocusIntegrating security into DevOps processes, automating security in CI/CD pipelinesImplementing and managing security measures specifically for cloud environments
Skills & CertificationsCloud platforms, DevOps tools, security automation, certifications like AWS DevOps Engineer, CISSPCloud security frameworks, encryption, compliance, certifications like CCSK, CISSP
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with development and operations teams, focuses on automation and continuous integrationWorks with security teams, cloud administrators, focuses on threat mitigation and compliance
Industry UsageCommon in organizations adopting DevOps with cloud infrastructureCommon in organizations prioritizing cloud security and compliance

While both roles focus on cloud security, the Cloud Devsecops Engineer emphasizes integrating security into development pipelines and automation, whereas the Cloud Security Engineer concentrates on implementing security measures and compliance within cloud environments.

Job description

Who we are:

Fuse builds innovative communications, networking, and computing solutions that improve the sharing of information, video, text, and voice among operators distributed throughout the airborne, maritime, and ground environments. We are a technology firm creating inโ€‘house software, network and hardware solutions that support our noble cause of advancing warfighter capabilities with elegant, userโ€‘focused communications, networks, and software systems.

About this role:

We are seeking a visionary, highly experienced Principal DevSecOps Engineer and Technical Leader to architect, secure, and scale our missionโ€‘critical software delivery platforms. In this senior leadership role, you will define the overarching DevSecOps strategy, driving the convergence of robust software development, automated operations, and stringent militaryโ€‘grade security compliance.

You will serve as a primary technical authority across the organization, mentoring engineering teams, establishing productโ€‘wide security paradigms, and ensuring our tactical edge solutions are resilient, secure, and rapidly deployable across diverse airborne, maritime, and ground environments.

This is a hands on technical leadership position that will play a key role in defining, communicating, and implementing Fuse DevSecOps practices.

What youโ€™ll do:
  • Technical Leadership & Strategy: Define the vision for DevSecOps, cloud architecture (AWS, Azure, govcloud), automated delivery pipelines, and Fuseโ€™s platform operating systems and utilities.
  • Security Architecture & Hardening: Lead the architectural design for automated container hardening, policyโ€‘driven operating system security (e.g., SELinux), SBOM generation and management, and continuous monitoring.
  • Enterprise CI/CD & Orchestration: Architect, scale, and optimize enterpriseโ€‘grade CI/CD frameworks utilizing GitLab CI, Ansible, Podman/Docker, Kubernetes, and RPM package management systems.
  • Governance & Process Enforcement: Establish, maintain, and enforce rigorous Software Development Processes and secure coding governance frameworks across all concurrent engineering projects.
  • Security Integration: Direct the integration and automation of advanced Static Application Security Testing (SAST), Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST), Software Composition Analysis (SCA), and code metrics tooling.
  • Crossโ€‘Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Project Management, Systems Engineering, Cybersecurity, and executive leadership to align infrastructure and product capabilities with sprint schedules and missionโ€‘critical release targets.
  • Infrastructure Management: Oversee the architecture and resilience of onโ€‘premises infrastructure (Jira, GitLab, vCenter/vSphere/ESXi environments, GNS3, etc.) and the development networks.
  • Innovation & AI Adaptation: Evaluate and introduce emerging pipeline methodologies, including the strategic integration of AI tools within CI/CD pipelines to optimize efficiency and software quality.
  • Mentorship: Act as a technical mentor at all engineering levels, fostering a culture of high performance, security mindfulness, and continuous learning.
We are looking for:
  • Education: B.S. or higher in an engineering field (Computer, Software, Math, Physics, Electrical, or related technical discipline).
  • Experience: 12+ years of progressive experience in DevSecOps or software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a dedicated technical leadership or architectural role focused on DevSecOps.
  • Software Development Expertise: Strong proficiency in a strongly typed language (preferably C++) for developing, reviewing, and auditing complex software systems, complemented by extensive scripting capabilities in Python and Bash.
  • Containerization & Orchestration at Scale: Proven track record of architecting and managing productionโ€‘grade container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes) in disconnected/degraded/decentralized environments.
  • Linux Mastery: Deep expertโ€‘level knowledge of Linux operating systems (RHEL, Ubuntu) and lowโ€‘level Linux networking, network architecture, and advanced troubleshooting.
  • Compliance & Government Standards: Deep familiarity with building software systems subject to national security requirements, including handsโ€‘on experience with STIG compliance, continuous monitoring, and security auditing tools.
  • Agile Frameworks: Extensive experience driving technical execution within Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
  • Implement enterpriseโ€‘wide observability frameworks: Experience implementing metrics, logs, tracing and other telemetry across complex microservices to rapidly isolate failure modes in both onโ€‘prem and cloud environments.
  • Clearance & Citizenship: US Citizen.
Nice to have:
  • Active US Secret or Top Secret clearance.
  • Experience with zeroโ€‘trust architectures.
  • Experience with Linux installation automation using utilities such as Kickstart or Subiquity.
  • Advanced certifications in Cloud (AWS/Azure Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer Professional) and/or Security (CISSP, CSSLP, Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist).
  • Experience with automated infrastructure provisioning and configuration management using advanced Ansible playbooks.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience implementing AIโ€‘driven code analysis or automated testing utilities into continuous integration pipelines.
