The VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) is a Level 1a major interdisciplinary teaching healthcare system, offering a variety of Inpatient and Outpatient services to Veterans at the medical center in La Jolla and at the six Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) located in Chula Vista, Escondido, Imperial Valley, Kearny Mesa, Oceanside, Sorrento Valley, and Rio Clinic. The VASDHS provides high quality care with advanced technologies and a compassionate service to Veterans.

Help
The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) RN assumes the following major functions/duties and responsibilities expected of the role:
Collaborates with the Designated Learning Officer (DLO) to provide clinical leadership and education for VASDHS.
- Responsible for the implementation, coordination, and oversight of the Life Support Training Program. Responsible for development, coordination, and oversight of comprehensive interdisciplinary education to promote quality training programs that include resuscitation (ACLS/BLS/Life Support) and Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior (PMDB).
- Maintains highest PMDB level of certification to provide instruction to staff in all areas.
- Consults with the Resuscitation Committee, Clinical Nurse Educators and Clinical Nurse Specialists to develop a strategic plan to provide ongoing simulation education to multiple clinical disciplines to promote excellence in Resuscitation training.
- Provides Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Basic Life Support (BLS) instructor training.
- Assesses, designs, plans, implements, coordinates, and evaluates educational offerings related to resuscitation for clinically active VASDHS staff. Plans, coordinates, and ensures compliance of the PMDB program including recruit instructors, coordinate training courses, serves as member on PBDM committees related to patient and employee disruptive behavior.
- Functions as the Life Support Training Coordinator documents, tracks and monitors the provisions of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS), and other resuscitation focused training programs throughout VASDHS.
- Provides critical train-the-trainer clinical simulation-based training to support the hospitals efforts to provide training to clinically active staff and other employees as needed.
- Identifies and recruit subject matter experts for the development and fielding of resuscitation curricula, evaluation of resuscitation training materials and equipment for procurement, and the development of assessment tools.
- Directs the work of the Simulation Coordinator in support of all the resuscitation training needs.
- Participates in resuscitation leadership as a member of the Resuscitation Committee.
- Serves as a consultant to all unit-based committees, and on other interdisciplinary task forces and committees as appropriate. Serves as chair or member for VASDHS councils or committees as appropriate.
- Assists with Multidisciplinary Mock Code training to include other resuscitation focused programs such as Advance Resuscitation Training (ART).
- Represents the VASDHS as the resuscitation simulation champion for SIMLearn, REdl, VISN and National level as well as with San Diego local community hospital counterparts.
- Conducts interdisciplinary meetings to promote Resuscitation training.
- Responsible for documenting staff ACLS/BLS/ or ART/BART certification in the VA Talent Management System (TMS) or any VA future replacement training documentation system for all individuals who require VA Validation of certification.
- Collaborates with clinical leaders to ensures a mechanism is in place to identify expiration dates for BLS/ACLS and waivers requests.
- Develops appropriate training processes to match evolving clinical objectives and strategies.
- Develops innovative approaches to training and education for clinicians, including the initiation of computer-based training and other current educational technologies.
- Functions as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities.
- Serves as a consultant for clinical nursing practice related to resuscitation training.
- Leads, provides consultation, facilitates, and authors VASDHS policies and procedures.
- Participates and reviews Joint Patient Safety Reporting (JPSR), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Mock Tracers and sentinel events.
- Collaborates and participates with VASDHS staff in the selection and process of performance measure improvement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7403(f), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6); OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active, and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant an appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associated degree/entry level Nursing education program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD).
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Graduate Nurse Technician (GNT) Exception: Candidates who otherwise meet the basic education requirements, but do not possess the required licensure, may be appointed at the entry step of the grade and level applicable to the completed nursing education as a GNT on a 120-day temporary appointment while actively pursuing licensure (may be extended up to two years on a case-by-case-basis.)
