Job description

Working under the direction of a credentialed PI at Hackensack Meridian Health, the Intern, Research handles tasks as assigned by physician mentors. This role will primarily be involved in a research project under a physician mentor with a focus in the area of cancer care. This role provides support as needed and gains on the job experience. The projects are IRB-approved protocols submitted by staff physician mentors.

The Center for Discovery and Innovation- CDI was established by Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) as an academic basic and translational research enterprise to rapidly translate science innovation to the clinic and to improve outcomes for patients with cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune disease and other acute and chronic diseases.  The CDI has grown rapidly since its origins in 2019, and now has 39 labs, 200+ scientists and allied personnel supported by 78 NIH and DoD grants and more than 87 other grants and contracts. Areas of expertise include genomics, epigenetics, drug resistance, stem cell biology, drug discovery, diagnostics and biomarker development, rheumatology and pharmacology.


A day in the life of a Intern, Research at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Reviews, collects and analyzes data.
  • Reviews reports and manuscript writing.
  • Participates in discussions, clinical activities and meetings as directed.
  • Assists Department team members with daily operations as assigned.
  • Assignments will vary in nature depending on the research office.
  • Works on various projects as needed while gaining a working knowledge of the laboratory and its functions.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Undergraduate student with minimum of 2 years college completed and a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Excellent organization, problem solving and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, or in a team, and handle multiple deadline driven tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
