Climate Risk Internship information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Climate Risk Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Climate Risk Intern, you need a background in environmental science, finance, or data analysis, with coursework or experience related to climate change and risk assessment. Familiarity with data analytics tools (such as Excel, R, or Python), climate modeling software, and ESG reporting frameworks is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns present complex findings and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for accurately assessing climate-related risks and supporting organizations in making informed, sustainable decisions.

What types of projects do Climate Risk Interns typically work on during their internship?

Climate Risk Interns are often involved in a variety of analytical and research-based projects, such as assessing the impact of climate change on financial assets, developing risk assessment models, and supporting the creation of sustainability reports. Interns may also assist in gathering and analyzing climate-related data, collaborating with teams from risk management, sustainability, and data science to deliver actionable insights. This hands-on experience not only exposes interns to current industry tools and methodologies but also provides valuable opportunities to contribute to real-world decision-making processes.

What is a Climate Risk Internship?

A Climate Risk Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience in assessing and managing the risks associated with climate change. Interns typically work with organizations to analyze climate data, evaluate potential environmental and financial impacts, and support the development of strategies to mitigate or adapt to climate risks. This role often involves collaboration with sustainability, finance, or risk management teams and can help interns build valuable skills in data analysis, research, and policy evaluation. Climate risk internships are ideal for those interested in environmental science, finance, or sustainability careers.

Job description

At ClimateAi, we choose to act.
We believe resilience is just as urgent as mitigation. We are building technology to empower people and industries to make smarter, faster decisions in the face of weather volatility.
Our mission is to climate-proof the global economy, with the goal of achieving zero loss of lives, livelihoods, and nature. From farmers and supply chain managers to risk analysts and policymakers, our users depend on ClimateAi's forecasts and insights to prepare for what's coming and take action in time.
In 2022, ClimateAi was recognized by TIME Magazine's Best Inventions, alongside innovators like OpenAI, for our breakthrough work in climate resilience technology.
What if your next position helped protect entire communities and safeguard the future of food, water, and livelihoods?
The Role
As a Data Engineer I at ClimateAi, you will be a hands-on contributor on the team that powers our climate models, forecasts, and customer-facing products. You'll build and maintain the pipelines that turn raw climate, weather, and agronomic data into trusted, reliable datasets used every day by Data Science, ML Engineering, and Product.
This is an early-career role designed for a strong CS or Computer Engineering graduate who is excited to grow into a great data engineer. You'll work closely with senior engineers and a manager who is invested in your development - with regular code reviews, design feedback, and pairing on real production systems from day one.
Our hybrid work schedule includes 3 in-person days at one of our core locations (SF, Boston) and 2 remote days.
What You'll Do
  • Write production-grade Python and SQL to ingest, clean, and transform climate, weather, and agronomic datasets from a wide range of third-party sources
  • Build and maintain scalable pipelines that perform scheduled and event-driven data workflows, following existing patterns and conventions
  • Contribute to data integrations across AWS services and connect new data services end-to-end with guidance from senior engineers
  • Participate in design discussions, code reviews, and team planning
  • Write clear documentation for the pipelines, data sources, and dependencies you own
  • Ask great questions and share what you're learning!
What We're Looking For
  • B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field (recent graduates encouraged to apply)
  • Solid programming fundamentals in Python and working knowledge of SQL
  • Exposure to cloud services (AWS, GCP, or Azure) as demonstrated through coursework, internships, or personal projects
  • Understands core data types, formats (CSV, Parquet, JSON), and ingestion patterns
  • Strong problem-solving instincts: you debug methodically, read other people's code carefully, and ask for help when blocked
  • A growth mindset and openness to feedback. You treat code reviews and design feedback as opportunities to level up
Bonus Points
  • Internship, co-op, or open-source experience writing data pipelines in production-like environments
  • Coursework or projects in distributed systems, machine learning, or climate/environmental science
  • Exposure to data pipeline scheduling and orchestration tools, such as Apache Airflow, Dagster, Argo Workflows, or similar

We are open to Boston, MA or San Francisco, CA for this position and will require in person coworking time with other ClimateAi employees 3x/week.
Compensation
The base compensation range for employees based in the US is $115,000-145,000 and equity in line with experience and company stage. This salary range may be inclusive of several career levels at ClimateAi and will be narrowed during the interview process based on a number of factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, business need and US location.
ClimateAi is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
What We Offer You
  • Competitive salary and equity
  • Medical, dental, vision benefits
  • Learning budget per year
  • Unlimited PTO policy with minimum time off requirements
  • Flexible working hours on many teams
  • Culture of diversity and inclusion including employee resource groups
  • Work with smart, curious, passionate people and be part of the mission to help the world

Culture
At ClimateAi we are driven by a united passion to tackle climate change. We believe in a culture of trust and transparency, where feedback is considered an opportunity for us to contribute to each other's personal and professional growth. We recognize the value of diversity and are an equal-opportunity employer. We hire people who are collaborative, adaptable, communicate well, and love to learn. Expect to give and receive constructive feedback, as we are constantly seeking to push the innovation frontier while simultaneously growing as individuals and as a team.
