Reporting to theย National Climate and Soil Healthย Director, theย Seniorย Climate andย Soil Healthย Scientistย supportsย AFTโ€™s Climate and Soil Healthย Programย by advancingย connectivity acrossย research, science translation, partnerships, and implementation strategies that accelerate adoption of resilient soil health management systems. This includesย a core focus onย biocharย integration, asย well asย other climate-beneficial approaches.ย The position supports AFTโ€™s efforts to catalyze a new conventional agriculture:ย empoweringย farmers and ranchers across the nationโ€™s diverse systemsย toย achieve on-farm and societal benefitsย fromย systems that areย soil health promoting,ย biodiverse,ย climate-neutral or better,ย resilient, equitable, and environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.ย 

Position summaryย 

As an integralย memberย of theย Climateย and Soil Healthย Program,ย theย Seniorย Climate andย Soil Healthย Scientistย leadsย research,ย technical program development, science translation, partnership building, training, fundraising, and implementation efforts that bridge research and practice.ย The position includes research responsibilitiesย butย is fundamentally a research-to-practice role focusedย on usingย scienceย to fosterย adoptionย of resilient soil health management systems.ย The position helpsย identifyย and address barriers to adoption and persistence, develops tools and resources that support decision-making, and advances emerging opportunities in biochar, PFAS, climate resilience, and related soil health innovation.ย The positionย requires a combination of scientific leadership,ย entrepreneurial spirit, innovation,ย excellent communication, and ability to collaborateย across disciplines,ย teams, andย diverse stakeholders.ย ย 

Dutiesย and responsibilitiesย ย 

Overallย 

The Climate and Soil Health Program is engaged across a growing portfolio of national and regional partnerships focused on advancing adoption of resilient soil health management systems.ย This role leadsย projectsย and workstreamsย that require collaborating across multiple federal, academic, non-profit, industry and other partners,ย andย collaboratesย toย develop new funded efforts that enable the translation from research to scientifically sound,ย economically viable, scalableย implementation ofย soil health management systems,ย includingย biocharย integration.ย Aย key priority focus area for this position is toย strengthenย AFT's leadership in addressing scientific, technical, economic, and implementation barriers that limit the sustainable production, integration, and scaling of biochar as a climate resilience and soil health management tool.ย 

Scientificย leadership forย soilย health,ย biochar, and climateย 

  • Research:ย Leadย appliedย research, literature review,ย technicalย review, dataย analysis, modeling, life cycle analysis, andย impact-oriented programmatic design and implementation, andย provide technical leadership for fundraising effortsย relating to biocharย and soil health.ย Collaborate across the team to compile, analyze, and publish project data andย results.ย 

  • Science Translation & Technical Resources:ย Lead and collaborateย onย science translation activitiesย that integrate research findings, producer innovations, and demonstration results intoย transformative technical resources:ย decision support tools,ย guides, factsheets,ย manuals,ย peer-reviewed publications,ย curricula,ย trainingsย and educational resourcesย thatย supportย successfulย adoption.ย ย 

  • Networks & Adoption:ย Contribute to development and continuous improvement of producer, advisor, mentor, and peer-learning networkย functioningย by integrating scientific findingsย andย AFTโ€™sย social, economic, and environmentalย programย evaluationย resultsย to strengthenย futureย network outcomes.ย ย 

  • Systems:ย Address adoptionย needsย acrossย soil health practices inย annual and perennial, high disturbance, and otherย systemsย acrossย varied agroecological zones,ย throughย AFTโ€™sย on-farm trialsย network, technicalย resources, andย trainingย programs.ย 

  • Training:ย Contribute scientific leadership and subject-matterย expertiseย to Advanced Soil Health Training,ย Growing with Biochar Training,ย peer learning networks, mentor programs,ย livestock and grazing training,ย and other capacity-building efforts designed to multiply adoption.ย 

  • Evaluation:ย Collaborate on the design and implementation of impact measurement, evaluation, and learning systems that assess adoption, persistence, environmental, economic, and networkย outcomes.ย ย 

  • Emergingย opportunities:ย Provide scientific leadership for emerging priority areas including biochar, PFAS, climate resilience, soil health systems, ecosystem services, and other strategically relevant topicsย andย entrepreneurialย opportunities forย AFT investment inย partnershipย development,ย innovation, and scaling.ย

  • Serve asย anย AFT representative andย thoughtย leaderย inย meetings, workshops,ย conferencesย and other external eventsย reaching diverse audiences, advancingย national visibility andย engagement aroundย biochar,ย soil health, climate resilience, and related topics.ย 

  • Help design, refine, deliver, and scale evidence-based curricula and learning pathways, includingย trainingsย and associated peer learning networks.ย 

  • Collaborate with AFT'sย Programs andย Communications teamsย to communicate andย elevate theย visibility, impact, lessonsย learned, andย thought leadershipย of AFT's Climate and Soil Health workย through stakeholder engagement,ย presentations,ย publications,ย websites,ย blog posts, press releases, social media, and other communications channels.ย 

  • Provide input and technical review for relevant policy recommendations, platforms, andย communications.ย ย 

Programmaticย and teamย managementย ย 

  • Lead and manageย teams of AFT staff and partners onย assigned projectsย or workstreams.ย Collaborateย across AFT, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS),ย Agricultural Research Service (ARS),ย Americanย Biocharย Instituteย (ABI),ย federal, academic, non-profit, industry, corporate supply chain,ย and other partners.ย 

  • Provide leadershipย andย programmatic managementย for funded work, ensuringย high qualityย deliverables,ย partner coordination, andย progress and final funder reporting.ย ย 

  • Support a strongย teamย culture of shared learning, innovation and problem solving among AFTย national and regionalย staff.ย

Requiredย Qualificationsย 

Scientificย experienceย andย soilย health andย biocharย expertiseย ย 

  • Significant scientific,ย technical,ย andย appliedย on-farmย expertiseย inย soil health, soil function, and interactionsย amongย production systems, soils, climatic conditions,ย and management,ย including adaptation ofย practices to site-specificย conditionsย acrossย diverse agricultural production systems.ย 

  • Familiarity withย soil systems modeling as well as withย microbial, ecological, and other soil science processes.ย 

  • Advanced understanding of soil health management systemsย implementation, biochar opportunities and challenges, and environmental co-benefits,ย climateย interactions, and technical barriers for producer adoption and success.ย ย 

  • Experienceย advancingย soil healthย management systemsย through development and application ofย models,ย tools, andย decision support resourcesย andย technicalย guidanceย that areย basedย inย research andย producerย experience.ย

To qualify for theย scientistย positionย regardless of level,ย theย incumbentย must have:ย ย

  • Degreeย in agronomy, soil science,ย agroecology,ย conservation, agricultural sciences,ย or relatedย fieldย andย commensurateย amount of experienceย in soil healthย and biocharย management.ย 

  • Mastersย degree andย aboutย 6ย years ofย relevantย workย experience; ORย 

  • PhD degree and aboutย 2ย years ofย relevantย workย experienceย ย 

To qualify for the senior level theย incumbentย must have:ย 

  • Significant, large scale,ย multi-regional or nationalย scientificย and implementationย leadership experience,ย successful fundraising,ย agriculturalย production systemsย expertise.ย 

  • Mastersย degree andย aboutย 10 years ofย workย experience; ORย

This is a senior scientist role, with a salary range of $100-110k, for candidates who meet the qualifications above. If we don't find that exact fit, we're open to someone earlier in their career with strong potential to grow into it. ย For a junior hire, the range would be $90-$99k

Working Conditionsย 

  • This role involves some travel to meet with producers, agricultural services providers,ย researchย professionals, and other agricultural and conservation stakeholders in indoor and outdoor locations, including visiting a variety of agricultural operations.ย ย 

  • Occasional evening or weekend work may beย requiredย to meet deadlines or attend events.ย 

Travelย 

  • Requires up toย 15% travel,ย potentiallyย including toย national headquartersย officeย in Washington, D.C., other regional offices, and elsewhere in the country.ย
