Climate Modeling Internship information

What is a climate modeling internship?

A Climate Modeling Internship is a temporary position where interns assist with developing and analyzing climate models to understand environmental changes. Interns typically work with climate datasets, run simulations, and help interpret model results. They may use programming languages like Python, R, or MATLAB, along with climate modeling software. The role provides hands-on experience in atmospheric science, climate research, and data analysis.

What types of projects or research tasks might I work on during a climate modeling internship?

As a Climate Modeling Intern, you can expect to assist with running and analyzing climate simulations, processing large datasets, and developing tools for data visualization or model improvement. Your daily tasks may include coding, running experiments, and interpreting results under the guidance of experienced scientists or researchers. You'll likely work in a collaborative environment alongside experts from various disciplines such as meteorology, computer science, and environmental policy. This hands-on experience not only strengthens your technical and analytical skills but also provides insight into the real-world applications and impacts of climate science.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a climate modeling internship, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Climate Modeling Intern, you generally need a background in atmospheric science, environmental science, mathematics, or a related field, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or R, and experience working with climate modeling software (e.g., WRF, GCMs), are highly valued. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams are important soft skills. These capabilities are essential for conducting accurate climate simulations, interpreting complex data, and successfully contributing to dynamic research projects.

Job description

Detroit R&D Center
Disciplines: Engineering Majors, Computer Science, Data Science, Material Science, Applied Economics.

Our interns will work with top scientists to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by increasing fuel efficiency, develop transportation technologies, and analyze future mobility modes.

Computational Modeling Intern Opportunity
Utilizing AI and computational modeling to research and develop innovative technologies that promote the internal combustion engine as a clean, efficient and sustainable mode of transportation.
Typical Activities include:

  • AI-powered automation for pre-CFD setup, post-CFD data processing, and HPC job preparation.
  • AI-enabled CAD and geometry workflows for model generation, cleanup, and simulation preparation.
  • AI-based advanced sampling methods for efficient design-space exploration, test matrix generation, and system optimization.

Global Technology Analysis Intern Opportunity
Perform and communicate comprehensive technical analyses to inform the development of the Technology Outlook and long-term strategy for sustainable company business growth. Key areas of emphasis include new energies, transition minerals, advanced materials, digital artificial intelligence, and diversified industrial sectors.
Typical Activities include:

  • AI-based data mining, covering the whole supply chain from extraction, refining, manufacturing, to end use and recycling.
  • Supply-demand dynamics modeling, including technology adoption, demand modeling and scenario analysis.
  • Technology and supply chain analysis including life-cycle analysis, techno-economic analysis, total cost of ownership analysis, and trade-flow optimization
  • Data visualization: Archie Materials, Power BI or Web-based interactive dashboards.
  • Technology Outlook reports: batteries, H2, transport technologies, etc.

Materials Analytics Intern
The intern will support the development of Archie-Materials, GTAT’s supply chain visualization and analytics platform for carbon and critical materials. This role focuses on improving data-driven understanding of material supply chains, including cost, emissions, availability, and market dynamics, to help identify sustainability opportunities and potential business value for Aramco.
Typical Activities include:

  • Collect, clean, and organize supply chain, cost, emissions, and materials datasets from public, commercial, and internal sources.
  • Support data mining, quality assurance, and large-scale database management for carbon and critical material supply chain analysis.
  • Conduct cost, environmental, and market analyses across the full material supply chain to identify key trends, risks, and business opportunities.
  • Develop visualizations, dashboards, and summary insights to communicate supply chain findings to technical and business stakeholders.

Energy Analytics Intern

The intern will support the development of Archie-Energies, GTAT’s global energy supply chain and greenhouse gas tracking platform. This role focuses on analyzing oil, natural gas, power, and carbon capture and storage pathways to support life-cycle assessment, carbon intensity benchmarking, and the positioning of Aramco’s lower-carbon assets.

Typical Activities include:

  • Collect, process, and manage large-scale datasets related to oil, natural gas, power, carbon capture and storage, and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Support life-cycle analysis, carbon intensity assessment, and benchmarking of global energy supply chains using the Archie-Energies platform.
  • Assist with Archie platform development by improving data workflows, visualization features, and user-facing analytical tools.
  • Explore and prototype AI-enabled features for interactive data analysis, automated reporting, and improved insight generation.
  • Conduct techno-economic and policy analysis of energy and carbon management. pathways, evaluating the impacts of regulations, carbon markets, incentives, and emerging climate policies on supply chain competitiveness and sustainability strategies.
