Climate Data Science information

How do climate data scientists typically collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to address complex environmental challenges?

Climate data scientists frequently work alongside meteorologists, ecologists, policy experts, and software engineers to analyze and interpret large datasets related to climate patterns and environmental impacts. Collaboration is key, as insights from different disciplines help ensure that the models and analyses are both scientifically robust and actionable for real-world decision making. Team members often hold regular meetings to discuss data sources, share findings, and align on research goals, which helps to bridge knowledge gaps and foster innovative solutions to climate-related problems.

What is climate data science?

Climate data science is an interdisciplinary field that uses statistical, computational, and analytical methods to gather, process, and interpret data related to the Earth's climate. Professionals in this area work with large datasets from sources like satellites, weather stations, and climate models to identify trends, make predictions, and inform policy decisions. Their work supports research on climate change, helps organizations adapt to environmental shifts, and contributes to the development of sustainable solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Climate Data Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Climate Data Scientist, you need strong analytical skills, a background in statistics or environmental science, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or R, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with climate modeling tools, geospatial analysis software (like ArcGIS or QGIS), and data visualization platforms is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for translating complex data into actionable insights. These skills enable accurate interpretation of climate data, effective teamwork, and impactful communication of findings to inform climate policy and research.

Job description

Job Summary:
Watershed is an enterprise sustainability platform that helps companies manage climate and ESG data. They are seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Data Products to design and maintain backend systems that process sustainability impact assessments and ensure data integrity.
Responsibilities:
• Design, build, and maintain the core backend platform responsible for calculating and processing sustainability impact assessments across global customer value chains.
• Architect and implement robust, scalable data models and systems that ensure consistency, integrity, and clear semantics for complex value chain and climate-related data.
• Develop and operate high-performance backend systems and data pipelines to efficiently ingest, transform, and harmonize external and customer datasets into reliable, production-grade data assets.
• Focus on the accuracy of the data that systems produce and can dive deep to ensure that all changes can be validated to protect customers from unintended data changes.
• Collaborate closely with climate scientists and data scientists to translate complex methodologies into high-quality, validated, and performant platform capabilities.
• Implement comprehensive validation, quality checks, and monitoring processes within the backend platform to ensure high reliability and correctness of customer-facing sustainability data.
• Build abstractions, tooling, and infrastructure that empower data scientists, analysts, and other engineering teams to safely and efficiently integrate new calculation methods and data processing logic.
• Partner with product, scientists and engineering leaders to define the roadmap and build the platforms and capabilities for serving customers with critical sustainability data and methods.
Qualifications:
Required:
• 6+ years of industry experience in backend software engineering with a strong focus on building and maintaining scalable systems for data storage, processing, and retrieval.
• Fluent in Python and SQL, and have experience with data pipelining and transformation frameworks.
• Experience designing and implementing backend systems that reliably ingest, validate, and structure data from diverse, messy, or inconsistent sources.
• Care deeply about engineering craft: writing well-tested, maintainable code and designing robust system architectures and abstractions that scale.
• Comfortable building backend platforms and tooling that will be used by other engineers, scientists, and analysts.
• Communicate complex technical topics clearly to both technical and non-technical collaborators.
• Thrive in environments that combine systematic organization with attention to detail, ensuring data integrity and system reliability while moving quickly.
• Motivated by solving sustainability challenges and excited to do so at a fast-paced startup.
• Must be willing to work from an office 4 days per week (except for remote roles).
Preferred:
• Typescript is a plus!
