Their work can include articles, marketing materials, web content, social media posts, and educational resources for organizations, nonprofits, or businesses. The goal of a climate copywriter is to inform, persuade, and inspire action on climate-related topics, making complex scientific information accessible to a wide audience. They often collaborate with scientists, activists, and policymakers to ensure accuracy and effectiveness in messaging.

Job description

About the Organization

The Goldman Environmental Foundation was established by Richard & Rhoda Goldman in 1989 to honor and inspire grassroots environmental activism around the world. The Foundation administers the Goldman Environmental Prize, the worldโ€™s foremost prize for grassroots environmental leaders.

The Prize recognizes individuals for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment. Each winner receives an unrestricted cash award, international recognition, and global visibility for the issues that they champion. By honoring these extraordinary leaders, the Foundation seeks to encourage all of us to protect the environment around the world. The Prize is presented each April, around Earth Day, at a ceremony in San Francisco. For more information, please visit http://www.goldmanprize.org/.

The Role

As the Graphic Designer & Content Creator, youโ€™ll be a core member of the Goldman Environmental Prizeโ€™s communications team, reporting to the Communications Director. Youโ€™ll create visual content that supports communications about the Prize and its winners. Working closely with the communications team and other staff and vendors, youโ€™ll design digital and print materials, edit and produce short-form video, create organic and paid social media content, develop and maintain brand templates and visual assets, and create event collateral.

The Opportunity

This is a newly created role for the Foundation, and youโ€™ll have the chance to shape it from the start. Through graphic design, video production, and digital and print content creation, youโ€™ll help bring the work of Goldman Environmental Prize winners to audiences around the world. As your familiarity with the organization grows, youโ€™ll have the opportunity to take on increasing responsibility for brand development, content strategy, and campaign planning in partnership with the communications team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create compelling visual assets for digital and print media, including social media, website, email campaigns, event collateral, and other communication materials
  • Maintain and evolve design templates, graphics, and layouts based on brand guidelines
  • Collaborate with the communications team to translate concepts into impactful visuals
  • Edit and produce short-form videos about Prize winners, including quick-turnaround phone-shot content
  • Manage a library of visual assets (videos, photos, branding)
  • Exercise discretion and sensitivity representing Prize winners across diverse global and political contexts, with a communication style thatโ€™s inclusive and grounded in storytelling
  • Stay current on design technology and AI-assisted tools
  • Support Prize winners and staff during annual Prize tour in April

As the role evolves, you may also contribute to:

  • A dynamic annual campaign and brand playbook
  • Strategy development, editorial calendar planning, and content planning
  • Light copywriting and social media content planning
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
  • Three to five years of experience in graphic design and content creation, whether gained in an agency, in-house, freelance, or cross-functional role. This is not an entry-level position, but we are open to nonlinear career paths.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) or comparable design tools, PowerPoint, and video editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, CapCut or similar)
  • Experience creating content for social media platforms and digital campaigns
  • Understanding of branding and its importance for a nonprofit, mission-driven organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound judgment communicating about sensitive or politically complex topics
  • Proactive and resourceful, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage competing priorities under deadlines
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to grow (and grow with) a new organizational role and make it your own
  • Interest in environmental issues and climate change
  • Communications or marketing experience
  • Comfort with and curiosity about new tools, including AI-assisted design/editing workflows
Compensation and Location

The starting annual salary range for this position is $95, 000โ€“$115,000, depending on skills and experience. The Goldman Environmental Foundation offers an excellent benefits package. This position is hybrid with two days in-office (usually Tuesday and Wednesday) and three days remote.

Candidates must live in the San Francisco Bay Area or be willing to relocate.

The Goldman Environmental Foundation is an equal opportunity employer.
