Job description

Transportation Engineering Intern | Long Island, NY

This posting is for Summer 2027 Internship opportunities.

IMEG is hiring a Transportation Engineering Intern in Long Island, NY. Over 10-12 weeks, you'll gain hands-on experience supporting engineering analysis, design, field inspections, report writing, permit applications, and site drainage and grading design while learning the transportation engineering trade.

You'll collaborate with experienced engineers and consultants, work within project budgets, and support cross-functional teams to help meet project goals and client expectations. You will also contribute to documentation, coordination, and project delivery within a civil team serving environmental, municipal, and wastewater clients across Long Island and New York City.

What You'll Do

  • Assist with transportation design for highway, bridge, transit, and multimodal projects according to code and IMEG standards.

  • Research commercially available equipment and project resources.

  • Support client relations, maintain the project design notebook, and provide documentation for permanent record files.

  • Coordinate design and schedule with other disciplines, including architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, technology, clerical, and equipment suppliers.

  • Document design decisions, meetings, and client instructions while monitoring project design progress.

  • Review project documents for accuracy and completeness before requesting a final check.

  • Assist with the preparation and issuance of addendum information.

  • Conduct periodic job site observations and support other services required by the contract services agreement.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Completed at least 2 years towards a Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent required

  • May be required to assist with field duties such as surveying and materials testing

  • Strong interest in design consulting

  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office programs, CAD software and BIM

  • Ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

Preferred

  • Prior internship experience in the building design consulting industry preferred

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds

  • Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull

  • Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises

  • Sewer engineering, SWPPP, and community-infrastructure design across Long Island and NYC

  • Higher-education and healthcare projects including LIU, St. Joseph's University, and Southampton Hospital

  • Landscape architecture, planning, and environmental services in-house

  • Recent work includes Great Neck Water Pollution Control Sewer, Government; LIU College of Science, Education; and Southampton Hospital EOR, Healthcare.

State of New York Pay Range: $22.00 - $24.00 per hour

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location.

Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate's experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.
