Job Summary:

The Portfolio Manager I role is the operational heartbeat of the market’s loan portfolio; keeping every deal, deadline, and detail moving smoothly from start to finish. This position will manage the full lifecycle of lending activity across the market, maintaining a deep understanding of each borrowing relationship while making sure credit applications, documentation, approvals, and renewals stay accurate, on time, and auditready.

The Portfolio Manager I is the connector between Relationship Managers, Loan Administrators, Credit, and senior leadership—coordinating requests, packaging approval-ready credit files, managing systems like Hawthorn River and SIBanking, and keeping asset quality front and center. From pricing models and Loan Offering Memoranda to exception tracking, reporting, and portfolio meetings, you bring structure and clarity to a fastmoving environment.

Part project manager, part credit partner, part detail detective—you’re trusted to handle multiple priorities at once, communicate clearly with clients and internal stakeholders, and ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Bottom line: The Porfolio Manager I will turn complexity into order and keep the entire portfolio running efficiently, compliantly, and confidently.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manages and monitors the market’s entire portfolio, including all deals throughout the complete process.
  • Understands all borrowing groups’ financials, needs, structures, etc.
  • Enters credit application into Hawthorn River, including loan coding, CRA, and HMDA sections.
  • Works and communicates with clients to obtain all financial, borrowing, and/or depository documentation, creating a shared/secure folder as needed.  Obtains copies of all borrower/guarantor IDs and pulls credit reports.
  • Uploads all financial documents to Hawthorn River.  Sends any Appraisal Disclosures and Joint Intent forms to clients.  Once final approval is obtained, ensures all documents are saved to the file cabinet in Hawthorn River
  • Assists with managing the profitability and credit quality targets for the loan portfolio.  Creates the Pricing Model on new and renewing credits.
  • Continually updates Hawthorn River as needed and creates the LOM for the credit package
  • Packages LOM, pricing model, and credit memo/package [Credit Analysts to get Adobe Pro so they can fully package credit memo and all underwriting attachments] into one file and emails to approvers (Market President, Regional President, Senior Credit Officer, etc., as applicable).
  • Manages final approvals through Hawthorn River
  • Works closely with Loan Administrators and RM on maturing loans to ensure financial documentation is received in a timely manner to proceed with renewal underwriting, annual reviews, and/or covenant reviews.  Ensures documents are added and exceptions cleared on SIBanking
  • Prepares Exception Waivers and maintenance forms to clear exceptions on SIBanking
  • Manages weekly calls with market, asking RMs questions, statuses, needs, etc., understanding overall status of portfolio.  Pulls all relevant reports from SIBanking for meeting.
  • Pulls Asset Quality (AQ) reports and sends to all AQ meeting attendees 24-48 hours in advance
  • Takes and provides notes for all meetings/calls (client, team, AQ, etc.)
  • Cross-trains with other members of the team (Loan Administrators).
  • Assists RMs with communication to critical internal stakeholders, including the SCO, Credit Analysts, Loan Administrators, Loan Operations personnel, and Treasury Management officers.
  • Conferring with credit associations and references to exchange credit information on clients
  • Create, edit, and maintain necessary records to log and track activities.
  • Ability to review, analyze, and evaluate financial and pertinent data to determine credit worthiness of loan prospects and merits of specific loan requests.  Collaborate with Relationship Managers and Loan Administrators to gather all necessary information to present an accurate and complete assessment of the loan presented. Interact with clients or representatives virtually or in-person calls in conjunction with Relationship Manager as needed.
  • Ensures timely tracking and detailed review of financial statements, loan covenants, and borrowing base reports.
  • Maintains reporting within tickler deadlines to update and clear exception items.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and submit applications on time.
  • The position requires above average attention to details, concern for the exact correctness of work, and strong commitment to tasks completed on time.
  • Participates in special projects
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of Portfolio Manager, Commercial Banking experience related to credit analysis and/or loan assistant experience, or combination thereof
  • Bachelor’s degree preferably in Finance, Accounting or other business related fields
  • Fundamental understanding of commercial credit underwriting.
  • Proficiency in analyzing and understanding financial statements, ratios and concepts.
  • Ability to effectively manage competing deadlines for projects in a high-pressure work environment with varying degrees of supervision.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of staff and management.
  • Must be well organized and detail oriented with the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
