Job description

Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission aligned Maintenance Worker to support our Facilities Department.

The Maintenance Worker will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

The Maintenance Worker will join our Facilities department that maintains a clean and professional work environment within the buildings throughout the agency with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate will be able to perform routine maintenance/custodial checks and tasks to ensure that the assigned sites are being cleaned to the standard set by HCZ and other regulatory agencies (Health Department, Board of Ed).

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have prior experience
  • Must pass a fingerprint background check and Physical/TB test

Who you are

  • Must be able to follow procedures for the safe use of cleaners and equipment, in order to prevent bodily harm and damage to the facility
  • Must be able to perform physical activities that require you to lift, push, pull or carry heavy/large objects

What you’ll do

  • Gather and empty trash.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
  • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
  • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
  • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
  • Vacuum, steam-clean and/or shampoo carpets.
  • Sweep, mop, strip, seal, finish, and/or polish floors.
  • Clean laboratory equipment, such as glassware and metal instruments, using solvents, brushes, rags, and power cleaning equipment.
  • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage.
  • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
  • Notify the immediate supervisor of all facility-related items at the assigned site.
  • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas as needed.
  • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings

Schedule

  • Work a flexible schedule
  • Monday-Sunday
    • 1st Shift 8am-3pm
    • 2nd Shift 11am-6pm
    • 3rd Shift 6pm-1am
