What is clean energy engineering?

Clean energy engineering is a field focused on designing, developing, and implementing technologies that generate energy from renewable and sustainable sources such as solar, wind, hydro, and geothermal power. Professionals in this area work to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, minimize environmental impact, and improve energy efficiency. Their work often involves research, project management, system design, and collaboration with other engineers and policymakers to promote cleaner energy solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a clean energy engineer?

To thrive as a Clean Energy Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, renewable energy systems, and sustainability concepts, typically supported by a degree in mechanical, electrical, or environmental engineering. Familiarity with simulation software (such as MATLAB or HOMER), energy modeling tools, and relevant certifications like LEED or FE are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help professionals excel in cross-disciplinary projects and stakeholder engagement. These skills are essential for designing innovative, efficient energy solutions that address environmental challenges and meet industry standards.

What are some common challenges faced by clean energy engineers in project implementation?

Clean energy engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies with existing infrastructure, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations, and securing project funding. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including environmental scientists, project managers, and government agencies—is essential to address these issues. Additionally, engineers must stay updated on technological advancements and sustainability standards to effectively design and implement renewable energy solutions.

This role is uniquely focused on developing and growing participation within an emerging and under-engaged customer segment of mid-size customers. Unlike traditional Energy Efficiency Consultant roles that primarily support established customer sectors, this position will require a proactive and strategic approach to identifying opportunities, understanding customer needs, developing engagement strategies, and creating scalable solutions that drive program participation and energy savings. The successful candidate will be comfortable navigating ambiguity, building new processes, and helping shape the future direction of the program.

  • Pilot and evaluate new outreach, engagement, and implementation approaches to improve program performance for mid-sized customers.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop scalable processes and best practices for emerging customer segments.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on assigned customer segments and provide recommendations regarding program design, customer engagement strategies, and market opportunities.
  • Provides direction to business partners, such as contracted vendors, and/or technical project expertise to customers and coordinates available resources specific to the procurement and installation of energy efficient measures, strategies, and systems.
  • Responsible for review and approval of moderately complex projects/programs, which require an understanding of engineering analysis/calculations, implementation strategy for new technologies, or energy simulation modeling.
  • Manages the integration of activities between the customer, program administrators, advisory consultants, and vendor/contractors.
  • Develops documents and plans necessary to meet compliance with regulatory filings and oversight of ratepayer funded Energy Efficiency programs.
  • Ensures that all projects and programs are accurate and in compliance with regulatory guidelines - reviews project documentation and program applications to confirm all required and supporting materials is provided to fulfill program participation parameters.
  • Participates in the budgeting, invoicing, evaluation, and tracking of expenses and energy savings; assists with the development of RFP's for contracted services.
  • Facilitates achievement of energy efficiency goals by promoting demand-reduction initiatives to assigned customers/customer segments and/or programs.
  • Partners with Energy Efficiency colleagues across sectors/channels, including Energy Efficiency Sales Account Executives, to set an energy efficiency implementation path and strategy for customer participation and energy efficiency program implementation.
