Job description

SUMMARY:
In collaboration with the classroom team, is responsible for assisting the Special Education Teacher with the implementation of effective academic and social-emotional programming for assigned students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • In collaboration with the classroom team, assists in the formulation of social-emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students' IEPs. In collaboration with the classroom team, implements social-emotional and behavioral programming consistent with students' IEPs. This may include assisting students with activities of daily life such as toileting and other forms of self-care. In collaboration with the classroom team, collects and manages data on social-emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.

  • In collaboration with the classroom team, prepares and presents verbal and/or written reports concerning social-emotional and behavioral functioning for assigned students.

  • Assists in implementation of the academic and social-emotional curricula as directed by the classroom teacher and team leader.

  • Provides academic support to students as directed by the classroom teacher.

  • Prepares and submits required paperwork for the student record. Attends and participates in classroom team meetings and other student-related meetings as assigned.

  • Attends and participates in supervisory sessions, staff meetings or other meetings as assigned.

  • Observes all Bradley Schools policies, rules and regulations.

  • Performs other duties as required, assigned, or directed.


EDUCATION:

  • Baccalaureate Degree preferred with a major in education or related human service fields.

  • Basic knowledge of data entry/management programs such as Excel. For those without this background upon hire, Excel training will be provided.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior experience working with children is helpful. Performs independently within department policies and practices.

  • Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required. Employees in this position work in a psychiatric setting under stressful conditions associated with care of psychiatrically impaired, aggressive, and sometimes, self-injurious students.

  • Employees are expected to utilize de-escalation techniques taught by LSS to minimize need for physical intervention. They must have the ability to remain calm during a crisis situation as evidenced by the ability to make quick rational decisions and prioritize immediate student care needs to maintain a therapeutic environment and ensure safety.

  • Employees in this position must also be able to participate in the physical management of students which can include, but is not limited to, awareness and demonstration of safe body positioning at all times, awareness and coordination to block and deflect possible aggression, and the ability to physically hold struggling students, using approved methods only, to maintain safety for extended periods of time. Specifically, such employees must be able to: lift up to fifty pounds; reach with their hands and arms; grasp and hold with their hands; bend/squat/kneel without limitation, and physically escort students who may become combative for short distances. Position requires occasional running for short distances, and frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
