Class 1 Driver Shunters are professional drivers licensed to operate large heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) with a Class 1 (Category C+E) license. Their primary responsibility is to move trailers and trucks around a depot, yard, or warehouse, rather than driving long distances on public roads. Shunters play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient flow of goods by positioning trailers for loading and unloading. The role requires excellent attention to safety procedures and the ability to maneuver large vehicles in tight spaces. Some shunter positions may also involve minor vehicle checks and reporting any mechanical issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Class 1 Driver Shunter?

Familiarity with tachograph systems, vehicle safety checks, and yard management software is typically required. Excellent spatial awareness, attention to detail, and good communication skills help drivers work safely and efficiently within busy logistics environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure safe, compliant, and effective movement of vehicles and trailers within transport yards or depots.

What are the typical challenges faced by Class 1 Driver Shunters when managing tight schedules in busy yard environments?
