What is a claims research associate?

Claims Research Associates are professionals who investigate and analyze insurance claims to determine their validity and ensure they comply with policy terms. They gather and review documentation, interview relevant parties, and communicate findings to claims adjusters or insurance companies. Their work helps prevent fraud and ensures that clients receive fair compensation. Claims Research Associates often work in insurance companies, healthcare organizations, or third-party administrators.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a claims research associate?

To thrive as a Claims Research Associate, you need strong analytical abilities, attention to detail, and a background in insurance, finance, or a related field—often supported by a relevant degree or experience. Familiarity with claims management software, databases, and Microsoft Office Suite is typically required, and some positions may value industry certifications like AIC (Associate in Claims). Excellent communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage time effectively help set top performers apart. These skills ensure accurate investigation and resolution of claims, which is essential for minimizing risk and providing excellent customer service.

What are some common challenges faced by claims research associates, and how can they be effectively managed?

Claims Research Associates often encounter challenges such as analyzing incomplete or ambiguous claim information, managing a high volume of cases, and coordinating with multiple departments to resolve discrepancies. Successfully managing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, effective organizational skills, and clear communication with both internal teams and external parties. Utilizing available claims management systems and regularly collaborating with colleagues can help streamline processes and ensure accurate claim resolution.

Both roles require knowledge of insurance policies, but Claims Adjusters typically need licensing, whereas Claims Research Associates focus more on research skills.

How can I become a claims research associate?

To become a claims research associate, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles preferring a bachelor's degree in fields like insurance, business, or related areas. Civil Litigation Associate
Simms Showers LLP

We’re hiring a Civil Litigation Associate Attorney who wants to practice at a high level and integrate their faith meaningfully into their work.

Who We Are
The Vision of Simms Showers LLP is to integrate our faith into the practice of law with excellence—to help people and glorify God. We are a mission-driven firm in the fullest sense. Our shared faith shapes how we treat one another, how we approach our work, and how we serve our clients.

Our culture is intellectually rigorous and genuinely warm. We collaborate closely, invest in one another, and are committed to supporting our team professionally and personally.

The Role
This is a hands-on civil litigation position that offers meaningful responsibility, mentorship, and opportunities for professional growth. You will support plaintiffs and defendants in a broad range of civil and commercial litigation matters, including contract disputes, business litigation, personal injury claims, and other complex matters. Working closely with experienced attorneys, you will assist in managing cases through all phases of litigation in state and federal courts, including legal research, motion practice, discovery, depositions, and trial preparation. This role provides the opportunity to develop strong litigation skills while taking increasing ownership of case responsibilities and contributing to successful client outcomes.

You’ll handle:
  • Case strategy and client counseling
  • Pleadings, discovery, and motions practice
  • Depositions and witness preparation
  • Negotiation and mediation
  • Trial preparation and court appearances

Your work will span state and federal courts across Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. You’ll be supported by a seasoned, accessible team that is invested in your success—but you’ll also be trusted to take ownership of your cases.

Compensation & Benefits
We offer a clear path for growth, with compensation that rewards performance over time.
•       $90,000 -$150,000 base range, with ability to transition to more lucrative hourly billables and collections-based compensation
•       Clear advancement tracks with partnership opportunity
•       Significant retirement benefits including a 401(k) with 4% firm match, cash balance contributions and profit-sharing contributions
•       Multiple health insurance options with the firm paying 75% of individual premiums for all plans and 60% of all family premiums
We’re Looking For

We are seeking a lawyer who desires their professional life to reflect their faith and is looking for a firm where that integration is both supported and expected.
•       1+ years of civil litigation experience or clerkship experience
•       Active bar admission in Virginia
•       Demonstrated legal research and writing skills
•       Ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, staff, clients and expert witnesses
•       Ability to take ownership of assignment
