What is the difference between Civil Structural Engineer vs Civil Engineer?

AspectCivil Structural EngineerCivil Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license, structural certificationsBachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license (optional)
Work EnvironmentDesigning, analyzing, and inspecting structures like buildings and bridgesBroader projects including transportation, water resources, and infrastructure
Industry UsageSpecialized in structural safety and integrityGeneral civil engineering projects across multiple sectors

While both roles require a civil engineering background and licensure, Civil Structural Engineers focus specifically on the design and safety of structures like buildings and bridges. Civil Engineers have a broader scope, working on various infrastructure projects. The choice depends on your interest in structural design versus general civil engineering work.

What is a civil structural engineer?

Civil Structural Engineers are professionals who design, analyze, and oversee the construction of structures such as buildings, bridges, and towers to ensure they are safe, stable, and able to withstand various loads and environmental conditions. They use principles of physics, mathematics, and material science to evaluate how structures will perform under stress and during their intended use. Their work is crucial in both new construction and the assessment or retrofitting of existing structures.

What are some typical challenges civil structural engineers face when coordinating with multidisciplinary teams on large projects?

Civil Structural Engineers often collaborate with architects, mechanical, and electrical engineers to ensure their designs integrate seamlessly with other systems. Challenges can include reconciling conflicting design requirements, managing changes in project scope, and maintaining clear communication across disciplines. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong project management skills and the ability to adapt to evolving project needs while maintaining structural integrity and safety. Being proactive in meetings and documentation helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps complex projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil structural engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Structural Engineer, you need a strong background in structural analysis, design principles, and materials science, usually supported by a degree in civil engineering and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, SAP2000, ETABS, and building codes is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders. These competencies ensure the safety, efficiency, and compliance of structures, which are critical for public safety and project success.

Job description

We're growing our structural team, and we're looking for an early-career Structural Engineer who's ready to dig into a diverse portfolio of projects across multiple market sectors - not just observe, but contribute - while working alongside experienced engineers and design professionals in a genuinely collaborative, team-oriented environment.ย
ย
This role is built for someone early in their structural engineering career who wants to expand their technical range, get exposure to a variety of building projects, and learn directly from seasoned professionals rather than figuring it out alone.ย
ย
And we're backing that growth with more than mentorship alone: this role comes with a guaranteed seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program. Over six months, you'll build professional development, business acumen, and project delivery skills through real case studies, simulations, and role-play - not passive lectures - culminating in an in-person capstone event where you'll present your work and map out your goals for the year ahead. Your Future Starts With A Plan.
  • Design building-related structures across project types, including new construction, renovations, and repair projectsย
  • Perform structural condition assessments of existing buildingsย
  • Prepare structural calculations, drawings, and technical documentationย
  • Collaborate with internal engineering and design teams to deliver high-quality solutionsย
  • Coordinate with external project partners and stakeholders as neededย
  • Support senior engineers and contribute to team-based project deliveryย
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineeringย
  • 1-5 years of relevant structural engineering experienceย
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification strongly preferredย
  • Fundamental working knowledge of REVITย
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software such as RISA, Tekla, and EnerCalc is a plusย
  • Working knowledge of building codes and nationally adopted design standardsย
  • Schedule Flexibility: Customize your work schedule to fit your life.
  • ย Health & Wellness: Comprehensive health benefits to keep you and your family healthy.
  • ย Continuous Learning: Access to online courses, conferences, and learning materials to fuel your professional growth.
  • ย Paid Time Off: Take the time you need to recharge with our generous paid time off policy.
  • ย Career Advancement: Clear paths for promotions and the opportunity to take on new challenges.
  • ย Fun Team Culture: Regular team-building activities, happy hours, and company outings.
The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company's good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
Visa sponsorship is NOT available for this position
