Civil Helper information

What is a civil helper?

Civil Helpers are entry-level workers in the construction and civil engineering industry who assist skilled tradespeople, such as masons, carpenters, and engineers, with various tasks on construction sites. Their duties may include preparing and cleaning work areas, moving materials, mixing concrete, and performing basic maintenance. Civil Helpers play a vital role in ensuring that projects run smoothly by supporting the main workforce and helping to maintain safety and efficiency on site.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a civil helper?

To thrive as a Civil Helper, you need basic construction knowledge, physical stamina, and familiarity with safety protocols, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience using hand and power tools, as well as understanding site safety systems like PPE and hazard communication, is commonly expected. Strong teamwork, reliability, and attention to detail set standout workers apart in this role. These skills ensure efficient support for skilled trades, maintain safety standards, and contribute to the successful completion of construction projects.

What are common challenges faced by civil helpers on construction sites, and how can they be managed?

Civil Helpers often encounter challenges such as adapting to changing site conditions, handling physically demanding tasks, and maintaining safety in a fast-paced environment. To manage these, it's important to stay attentive to instructions from supervisors, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and communicate effectively with team members. Developing good time management and being proactive in assisting skilled workers can also help make the workday smoother and more productive.

A growing heavy civil contractor is seeking an experienced Civil Estimator. The company currently produces approximately $15M in annual revenue and is targeting growth to roughly $30M over the next two to three years. The majority of current work is roadway, municipal, utility, and concrete paving, with an active push to expand into commercial utilities and sitework. The ideal candidate brings strong estimating experience across roadway, sitework, utilities, concrete paving, and structural civil work, along with contacts that can help grow the commercial and public sector pipeline.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare accurate, competitive estimates for civil construction projects including roadways, site development, utilities, concrete paving, drainage, and structural work.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs, pricing, and bid preparation using HeavyBid and related estimating tools.
  • Review plans, specifications, and bid documents to identify scope, risk, and opportunity.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with general contractors, owners, developers, municipalities, counties, and utility contacts to support business development and bid coverage.
  • Support the expansion of the commercial utilities and sitework division while continuing to serve existing public works and infrastructure work.
  • Coordinate with project management, operations, subcontractors, and vendors throughout the bid process.
  • Track historical pricing, labor productivity, and market conditions to improve estimate accuracy over time.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of civil estimating experience, with strong knowledge of heavy civil construction.
  • Hands on estimating experience in roadway, sitework, utilities, concrete paving, and/or structural civil work.
  • HeavyBid experience is highly preferred and considered a key requirement for this role.
  • Existing contacts in commercial civil utilities, sitework, paving, or public sector work are highly desirable.
  • Experience bidding municipal, county, residential, and commercial civil projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Strong communication, organization, and negotiation skills.
  • An independent, proactive professional who can help build a larger estimating pipeline.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range of $120,000 to $130,000, with flexibility based on experience and fit.
  • Full benefits package including health coverage through Ethna Health.
  • Employee coverage included.
  • No 401(k) currently offered.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and drug screening in accordance with company policy and applicable laws. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of the offer.
