Opportunities for advancement include leadership and/or project management courses, business development involvement, and delegation of responsibilities to traffic engineering staff.
The Transportation Engineer or Planner (Traffic & Safety) will work independently on smaller projects, and as a team member of a larger project under the guidance of transportation sector leadership, which includes the leaders of our Traffic Engineering and Transportation Planning (TPTE), Project Development and Environment (PD&E), and Roadway Design groups. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of transportation projects including Safe Streets for All studies, transportation planning studies, traffic engineering studies, and highway/corridor/intersection improvement projects from conceptual through final design.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Assist with and oversee traffic forecasting, safety, and operational analyses.
- Perform safety-related services, such as compilation of existing crash data, multidisciplinary field reviews, review of crash data to determine potential causes, recommendation of crash countermeasures, use of Highway Safety Manual methodologies, and economic benefit-cost analyses of such safety improvements.
- Conduct multi-modal transportation analyses, including traffic, bike/ped, and freight, using Complete Streets practices for our most vulnerable road users.
- Work with a variety of analysis software programs effectively, including some or all of the following: Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, VISSIM, Vistro, AimSun, Sidra, CUBE/Voyager, TransCAD, VISUM, ArcGIS, Python, Signal 4 Analytics, IHSDM, HSM worksheets, FDOT's CAP-X, and FDOT's ICE.
- Work with a suite of Microsoft products including the following: Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, and Project Professional
- Convert results and measures of effectiveness from such software to make timely and informed recommendations to clients, elected officials, and stakeholders.
- Interact directly with state and local government clients and review agencies at project meetings and ensure that all client project designs satisfy engineering standards and exceed client expectations.
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams on tasks such as regional transportation planning studies, Project Development & Environment (PD&E) studies, traffic calming studies, traffic impact studies, road safety audits, transit station facility design, surface/garage parking lot design, transportation management plans, intersection design, signal design, roadway design, signing and pavement marking plans, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Transportation Systems Management & Operations (TSM&O), site plan design, construction staging plans, and traffic and signal operation analysis.
- Prepare written technical reports to document the results of engineering/planning studies and surveys, including Traffic Impact Statements.
- Build and maintain relationships with key traffic engineering clients and review agencies both through project involvement and professional organization involvement, such as ITE events.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, or related field.
- Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Florida, or able to receive reciprocity within 3 months.
- As an alternative to engineering licensure, may be certified as a planner (AICP) by the American Planning Association.
- 5+ years of relevant traffic engineering/planning experience.
- Proficiency is expected with software programs including some or all of the following: Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, VISSIM, Vistro, AimSun, Sidra, CUBE/Voyager, TransCAD, VISUM, ArcGIS, Python, Signal 4 Analytics, IHSDM, HSM worksheets, FDOT's CAP-X, and FDOT's ICE.
