Building trust and encouraging active participation are key to helping students feel comfortable and confident as they prepare for the naturalization process.

What is a citizenship instructor?

A citizenship instructor works as a teacher for people who are going through the naturalization process to obtain citizenship. Your job duties in this career depend on student needs and the mission of your employer. Often, you provide ESL instruction or education for legal permanent residents (LPRs) to help them prepare for citizenship. Your responsibilities may include lesson planning, assessing student needs, and assisting students to adjust to life in a new country. You may work with a naturalization representative to ensure that your LPR students adequately prepare for the citizenship exams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a citizenship instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Citizenship Instructor, you need a solid understanding of civics, U.S. history, and immigration processes, typically backed by a bachelor's degree in education or a related field. Strong communication, cultural sensitivity, and patience are crucial soft skills for engaging and supporting diverse adult learners.
