What is a Cisco NSO developer?

Cisco NSO Developers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain network automation solutions using Cisco Network Services Orchestrator (NSO). They build and customize services that automate network provisioning and management tasks, enabling service providers and enterprises to efficiently operate complex networks. Their role typically involves writing service models, integrating NSO with other systems, and ensuring seamless deployment of network changes. These developers often have expertise in network engineering, programming (such as Python and YANG modeling), and automation best practices.

What are some common challenges a Cisco NSO developer faces when integrating NSO with legacy network infrastructure?

Cisco NSO Developers often encounter challenges when integrating NSO with older, legacy network devices that may not fully support modern APIs or protocols. These situations can require custom device adapters or tailored service models to bridge compatibility gaps. Collaboration with network engineers and device vendors is typically necessary to ensure seamless automation and minimize disruptions. Flexibility and strong troubleshooting skills are essential to resolve unexpected issues that arise during integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cisco NSO developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cisco NSO Developer, you need a solid understanding of network automation, programming (Python or Java), and experience with Cisco NSO, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with network protocols, YANG data modeling, REST APIs, and certifications such as Cisco DevNet are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient automation of network operations, seamless integration with existing systems, and the ability to troubleshoot and optimize network services.
