Job description
Under supervision of the Director of Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and Cellular Therapy Program, the ONC Transplant Coordinator coordinates evaluation and preparation of patients for Hematopoietic Stem Cell (HSC) transplantation, cellular therapies and long-term management of patients post-treatment. Coordinates patient care across outpatient clinics, inpatient nursing unit and community to provide continuity of patient care across settings. Serves as a clinical resource for other team members, patients/family/caregivers, referring case managers and community clinicians. Demonstrates knowledge and competence regarding management and care of patients with oncologic and hematologic malignancies and other diseases treated with HSC transplantation and cellular therapies. Exercises wide latitude in decision-making within written organizational and department policies and principles. Responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital.
Essential Functions:
- Coordinates and promotes clinical activities of adult and pediatric, autologous and allogeneic HSC transplantation and other cellular therapies.
- Provides consultation to TGH Medical Faculty, other physicians, nurses and health care professionals who provide health care to HSC transplant or cellular therapy patients.
- Collaborates in development and updates of protocols and guidelines for BMT and Cellular Therapy Clinical Program SOP Manual.
- Supports enrollment of transplant and cellular therapy patients in clinical trials by working collaboratively with Research Coordinators.
- Maintains knowledge of current practices in transplantation/cellular therapy, oncology and hematology, including changes in SOPs, FACT (Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy) standards, workflows, guidelines, etc.
- Completes training required to consent patients to trials involving the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) or procurement of unlicensed umbilical cord blood units.
- Completes paper- or electronic data reporting forms for CIBMTR and National Marrow Donor program, as needed.
- Clinical practice support as needed for BMT Cellular Therapy patients during evaluations, transplant and post-transplant follow-up within scope of RN licensure and TGH RN education requirements.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- License: Registered Nurse – Issued by Florida or Compact State
- Certification: Certified Hematopoietic Transplant Coordinator (CHTC) by American Board for Transplant Certification (ABTC) Blood and Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse (BMTCN) by Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) (within 2 years of hire)
- Work Experience and Additional Information: Minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience as an RN caring for acute and chronically-ill adults and/or children. Two (2) years of experience in Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant or Hematology. Two (2) years of experience with clinical research and insurance prior authorization, or transplant contracting.
Technical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of disease pathophysiology, diagnostic testing, coordination and timing between completion of standard care.
- Knowledge of transplant/cellular therapy, treatment eligibility criteria, pre-treatment conditioning regimens, immunosuppressive regimens, side effects, supportive care protocols and management of post-treatment complications.
- Knowledge of evaluation and eligibility criteria for autologous, related family and unrelated donors and methods of cell collection and anticipated side effects.
- Familiarity with institutional, national and international guidelines for transplant procedures, donor selection and patient safety.
- Proficiency in educating patients and caregivers about treatment plans, risks and post-treatment care, while advocating for needs and preferences.
- Independent thinking skills; high degree of problem-solving and rapid decision-making skills, often requiring an innovative approach to resolve complex and unanticipated problems.
- Ability to apply appropriate interventions to individual patients and patient concerns while performing daily tasks.
- Ability to manage complex care transitions between outpatient, inpatient and community settings, ensuring continuity and quality of care.
- Strong ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, interdisciplinary teams and external providers, including case managers and referring clinicians.
- Ability to work seamlessly with physicians, nurses, social workers and other specialists to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Ability to remain composed and effective in fast-paced, high-stakes clinical situations involving critically-ill patients.
- Demonstrated capacity to serve as a clinical expert and mentor for team members, contributing to staff development and program improvement.
