What does a chief financial officer do?

A Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior-level position within a business or organization. This role demands a lot of high-level financial responsibility; the main tasks include creating and overseeing the company’s budget, managing shareholder financial questions, and addressing the general financial accountability and risk of the business. You will spend most days supervising the accounting team, networking with stakeholders, and meeting with other executive colleagues. A Chief Financial Officer’s job has two key parts: managing the day-to-day monetary picture and advising leadership on the overall financial strategy. This may include creating and presenting financial reports to boards and colleagues. Chief Financial Officers may also play a role in hiring for the company, especially for other high-level financial positions within the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chief financial officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Financial Officer, you need deep expertise in financial management, strategic planning, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a CPA, MBA, or equivalent financial qualifications. Mastery of financial reporting tools, ERP systems (such as SAP or Oracle), and advanced Excel skills are commonly required. Leadership, strong communication, and decision-making abilities are crucial soft skills for guiding teams and influencing executive strategy. These competencies ensure financial health, risk management, and the alignment of fiscal strategy with organizational goals.

What are some common challenges a chief financial officer faces when aligning financial strategy with overall business objectives?

A Chief Financial Officer (CFO) often encounters the challenge of balancing short-term financial performance with the company’s long-term strategic goals. This involves coordinating closely with other executive leaders to ensure that the financial strategy supports wider business initiatives, such as expansion or digital transformation, without overextending resources. CFOs must also adapt financial planning in response to shifting market conditions and regulatory requirements, all while fostering clear communication across departments to ensure buy-in and alignment. Navigating these complexities requires both strong financial acumen and collaborative leadership skills.

Job description

Join Vacatia and Shape the Financial Strategy Behind Our Growth

Location: Fort Lauderdale, Florida, On-Site

Vacatia is an innovative hospitality company reinventing the vacation rental and ownership experience across discovery, booking, and stay. We’re building the next generation of travel lifestyle products, blending technology, hospitality, and design to create smarter, more connected experiences for guests, owners, and partners.

We’re looking for a strategic, hands-on Director of Corporate FP&A to lead our Financial Planning and Analysis function from end to end. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this leader will oversee budgeting, long-range planning, forecasting, financial modeling, and executive and board-level reporting across our portfolio of approximately 15 properties and corporate operations.

You’ll serve as a strategic finance partner to the President and leaders across Sales, Operations, Legal, People & Culture, Asset Management, and other key functions. You’ll also build and develop the Corporate FP&A team, establish scalable financial processes, and translate complex financial and operational information into clear recommendations that guide business decisions.

If you’re an experienced finance leader who can balance strategic thinking with hands-on analysis and enjoys building teams, systems, and processes, this is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact on Vacatia’s continued growth.

Why You’ll Love It Here

  • Partner directly with the CFO, President, executive leadership, and ownership on high-impact business decisions.
  • Lead financial planning and strategy across a growing portfolio of approximately 15 properties.
  • Build and develop the Corporate FP&A team and establish the foundation for a scalable finance function.
  • Influence capital allocation, acquisitions, revenue initiatives, financing structures, and other strategic priorities.
  • Create the models, dashboards, reporting, and processes that will shape how Vacatia measures performance and plans for growth.

Your Impact

  • Lead annual budgeting, long-range planning, and quarterly reforecasting across Vacatia’s property portfolio and corporate operations.
  • Own executive and board-level reporting, translating property-level performance, KPI trends, and financial variances into a clear strategic narrative.
  • Partner with the President and CFO on capital allocation, competitive benchmarking, acquisitions, revenue opportunities, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee financial analysis of Vacatia’s in-house financing and collections portfolio, including portfolio risk, delinquency, default, credit, and macroeconomic trends.
  • Build and continuously improve the FP&A function through team development, reporting automation, dashboarding, data extraction, and scalable planning processes.

What You Bring

  • Eight to twelve years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, investment banking, private equity, or a related financial discipline.
  • At least two to three years of experience leading teams, developing finance professionals, or building an FP&A function.
  • Experience in hospitality, vacation ownership, multi-site real estate, or another asset-heavy, portfolio-based organization.
  • Advanced Excel and financial modeling capabilities, with demonstrated experience building reporting infrastructure and FP&A processes from the ground up; Python or SQL experience is a meaningful advantage.
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and credibly to senior leaders, board members, and ownership.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related field is required. An MBA, CFA, or CPA designation and familiarity with consumer finance concepts including securitization, advance rates, FICO-based underwriting, and collections analytics are preferred but not required.

Join Us

At Vacatia, you’ll have the opportunity to build a critical finance function, influence portfolio-wide strategy, and help leadership make confident, data-driven decisions. If you’re ready to combine financial expertise, executive partnership, and team leadership to support the next stage of our growth, we’d love to hear from you.
