Job description

Controller

Location: Austin, TX (Full-Time / Exempt) Department: Finance & Accounting Reports To: Chief Operating Officer (COO) & Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

About the Role

Trident is partnering with a high-growth insurance agency and Third-Party Administrator (TPA) in Austin, TX, to find an experienced Controller.

This is a hands-on, high-ownership role suited for a financial leader who brings both technical accounting depth and a builder's mindset. You will take direct ownership of the month-end close, multi-entity financial reporting, complex vendor reconciliations, and an upcoming system migration from QuickBooks to Sage Intacct. If you excel at bringing financial discipline, cleaning up historical data, and building scalable infrastructure from the ground up, this is the opportunity for you.

What You’ll Do
  • Accounting Operations & Month-End Close: Own the monthly financial close across three entities. Prepare accurate financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow) and ensure they are delivered within a defined close calendar.
  • Process Building & SOPs: Build, document, and manage a detailed step-by-step close process. Write clear Accounting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent execution.
  • Historical Remediation: Partner with executive leadership to clean up historical records. Identify and correct misclassified entries, missing accruals, and unsupported balances while building bulletproof supporting schedules.
  • System Migration (Sage Intacct): Serve as the primary accounting owner for the transition from QuickBooks to Sage Intacct. Define the chart of accounts, validate migrated data, and develop new system workflows.
  • Complex Reconciliations: Perform monthly bank reconciliations across all accounts. Reconcile billing and vendor payments based on Per Employee Per Month (PEPM) formulas against enrolled member counts.
  • TPA & Self-Funded Group Support: Manage financial reporting and reconciliation for approximately 60 self-funded employer groups. Ensure claims disbursement activity is accurately recorded and reconciled to plan trust accounts.
  • Leadership: Manage and mentor a growing accounting team, currently including a Staff Accountant and a Bookkeeper/Analyst. Oversee AP/AR functions and provide executive-level financial analysis and variance commentary.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA is strongly preferred.
  • Experience: 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2+ years in a Controller (or equivalent) role managing a full-cycle, multi-entity close.
  • Clean-up & Building Skills: Demonstrated experience correcting and cleaning up historical accounting records, as well as building SOPs from scratch.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong command of GAAP, accrual accounting, revenue recognition, and intercompany eliminations. Advanced Excel skills are a must.
  • System Implementation: Proven experience migrating or implementing accounting systems. Prior experience with Sage Intacct is a massive plus.
  • Industry Bonus: Experience in insurance, Third-Party Administration (TPA), managed care, or employee benefits (especially self-funded health plans) is highly preferred.
