Work EnvironmentOne-on-one or small group sessions, often private or onlineClassroom setting, large groups of students, school facilities
Employer & IndustryPrivate individuals, tutoring companies, online platformsSchools, educational institutions, districts
Search & Comparison IntentPeople seeking personalized chemistry help or supplemental instructionIndividuals looking for formal chemistry education or teaching careers

While both roles involve teaching chemistry, chemistry tutoring offers personalized, flexible instruction often outside traditional classrooms, whereas chemistry teachers work in formal educational settings with structured curricula and larger student groups.

How do chemistry tutors balance individualized instruction with managing multiple students' learning needs?

Chemistry tutors often work with students who have varying backgrounds and learning styles, so they must tailor their approach accordingly. In one-on-one settings, tutors assess each student's strengths and weaknesses, then develop targeted lesson plans and practice problems. When tutoring small groups, they encourage peer collaboration while providing differentiated support, ensuring that each student stays engaged and receives the guidance they need. Regular feedback and communication with students help tutors adjust their strategies and maximize learning outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chemistry tutor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chemistry Tutor, you need a solid understanding of chemistry concepts, often demonstrated by a relevant degree or coursework, along with experience in teaching or tutoring. Familiarity with digital learning platforms, virtual whiteboards, and educational resources like online quizzes or simulations is commonly required. Excellent communication, patience, and the ability to tailor explanations to diverse learning styles are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure that students effectively grasp challenging material and build confidence in their chemistry knowledge.

What is chemistry tutoring?

Chemistry tutoring is a personalized educational service in which a tutor helps students understand chemistry concepts, complete assignments, and prepare for exams. Tutors tailor their teaching methods to meet the student's individual needs, clarifying difficult topics such as chemical reactions, equations, and laboratory techniques. Chemistry tutoring can be conducted in person or online, and is beneficial for learners at all levels, from high school to college. By working with a tutor, students often gain confidence, improve their grades, and develop a deeper interest in the subject.

Chemistry Tutor (Part-Time) - High School & College Level

Teacher Tutors

Livingston, NJ โ€ข On-site

$40 - $50/hr

Part-time

Posted 25 days ago

Job description

Teacher Tutors is hiring part-time Chemistry tutors to join our team on a flexible basis. We're seeking educators with strong chemistry backgrounds to support students from high school through the college level. This role is ideal for tutors who are confident across general, honors, and AP Chemistry, as well as introductory and organic chemistry at the college level, and who enjoy working one-on-one with students.

Our students range from those building foundational skills to those tackling honors, AP, and college coursework. Sessions take place in students' homes, at the library, at our Livingston, NJ office, or online. Most of our clients prefer in-person tutoring, so we'd love tutors who are open to offering it. We match families to tutors based on your preferred travel radius; you tell us how far you're willing to drive, and we work within that.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver one-on-one chemistry tutoring sessions tailored to each student's course, instructor's expectations, and learning goals.
  • Plan lessons and prepare materials (practice sets, review guides, worked problem sets, reaction and mechanism practice, lab concept reviews, exam-style questions, and structured exam-prep schedules as test dates approach).
  • Build students' fluency with core chemistry skills and concepts: the mole concept, stoichiometry, balancing equations, dimensional analysis, atomic structure, bonding, thermodynamics, kinetics, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, and organic reactions and mechanisms and their ability to move between different representations of the same idea (molecular, symbolic, and mathematical).
  • Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and difficulty based on what's working.
  • Submit a short session note after each tutoring session and flag concerns to our Director early.
  • Communicate clearly and warmly with parents.
  • Contribute to our team's shared practice: share what's working, ask questions, and help us keep raising the bar.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or a closely related field. Master's or PhD candidates are welcome.
  • Demonstrated mastery of chemistry at the level(s) you'll be tutoring (high school general and honors chemistry, AP Chemistry, and/or college general and organic chemistry) with the ability to scale up to more advanced coursework.
  • Tutoring, TA, or classroom teaching experience (formal or informal) with students at the relevant grade levels.
  • Working familiarity with the relevant curriculum standards and exam frameworks (e.g., NGSS, the AP Chemistry course and exam framework, and common college general and organic chemistry sequences) and the areas where students most often struggle, such as stoichiometry, limiting reagents, equilibrium, and organic mechanisms.
  • Strong communication skills and the patience to work with students who may arrive frustrated, anxious, or burned out after a rough test or assignment.
  • Ability to plan individualized sessions and adapt in real time when a planned approach isn't landing, including explaining the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks.
  • Availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with extra capacity around exam season and finals.
  • Comfort with educational technology.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license for in-home sessions.

Preferred

  • A track record of strong outcomes with chemistry students at the subjects and levels you will be tutoring (e.g., grade improvement, AP score gains).
  • Background or experience that allows you to support advanced or specialized coursework, such as AP Chemistry, organic chemistry, or college-level general chemistry.
  • Familiarity with the major textbooks and curricula commonly used in these courses, so you can meet students inside the framework their teacher or professor is using.
  • Real-world or professional experience (academic, industry, or research) that helps you make abstract concepts concrete (for example, connecting reaction chemistry or lab technique to work you've done).
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Mandarin, or other languages common in the communities we serve).

Benefits

Compensation & employment status

  • Pay range: $40 - $50/hour, based on degree and experience
  • W-2 (default): Most part-time tutors join as W-2 employees. Teacher Tutors handles payroll, taxes, and provides liability coverage during sessions.
  • 1099 (optional): Tutors who prefer 1099 contractor status are welcome, provided they carry their own professional liability insurance and operate through a registered LLC. Documentation will be requested during onboarding.

Coverage area

We serve families across northern New Jersey, with most in-home sessions concentrated in Essex, Morris, Union, and Bergen counties. When you join, you'll let us know your preferred travel radius from home, and we'll match you with students within that range.
