How much do chemist engineer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for chemist engineer in the United States is $25.04, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $21.15 and $28.37 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a chemistry engineer do?

A chemistry engineer designs and develops chemical processes and equipment to produce products such as fuels, pharmaceuticals, and plastics. They apply principles of chemistry, physics, and mathematics, often working in laboratories or manufacturing plants, and may use tools like process simulation software. Certification or a degree in chemical engineering is typically required for this role.

What are Chemist Engineers?

Chemist Engineers, often referred to as Chemical Engineers, are professionals who apply principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and engineering to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals, fuel, drugs, food, and many other products. They design processes and equipment for large-scale manufacturing, plan and test production methods, and oversee facility operations. Chemical Engineers work in a variety of industries, including energy, pharmaceuticals, food processing, and environmental protection. Their work ensures that products are produced efficiently, safely, and sustainably.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chemical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chemical Engineer, you need a solid background in chemistry, mathematics, and engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with process simulation software (like Aspen Plus or ChemCAD), safety regulations, and industry certifications such as FE or PE is often required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set exceptional professionals apart in this role. These skills are crucial for designing safe, efficient processes and collaborating effectively to solve complex engineering challenges.

Can you make 300k as a chemical engineer?

Earning a $300,000 salary as a chemical engineer is possible but typically requires extensive experience, advanced specialization, management roles, or working in high-paying industries such as oil and gas or pharmaceuticals. Most chemical engineers earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, with top earners in senior positions or in certain regions reaching higher salaries. Achieving such a salary often involves additional certifications, leadership skills, and working in locations with higher cost of living and compensation packages.

What are some common challenges a Chemist Engineer faces when transitioning projects from the laboratory to large-scale production?

Chemist Engineers often encounter challenges when scaling up from lab experiments to full-scale manufacturing, such as maintaining product quality, ensuring process safety, and optimizing cost-efficiency. Variations in reaction yields, unexpected equipment issues, and the need for strict regulatory compliance can complicate this transition. Effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including safety, quality assurance, and production staff—is crucial to address these challenges and refine processes for consistent, safe, and economical operation.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, and certain software engineering roles can earn salaries of $500,000 or more annually, often including bonuses and stock options. These positions typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and often involve leadership or executive responsibilities.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum engineering, aerospace engineering, and certain software engineering roles can earn $300,000 or more annually, especially with experience, advanced skills, and leadership responsibilities. These positions often require advanced degrees, certifications, and extensive industry experience.
