How much do chemical safety jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for chemical safety in the United States is $22.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $25.72 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is chemical safety?

Chemical safety refers to the management of chemicals to prevent harm to people, property, and the environment. It involves understanding the hazards associated with chemicals, proper storage and handling, use of protective equipment, and emergency response procedures. Chemical safety is crucial in workplaces like laboratories, manufacturing plants, and anywhere chemicals are used or stored. By following chemical safety protocols, organizations can reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and environmental contamination.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in chemical safety?

To thrive in Chemical Safety, you need a solid background in chemistry, hazard identification, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a degree in chemistry or chemical engineering. Familiarity with safety data sheets (SDS), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations, and risk assessment software is crucial. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies help ensure workplace safety, environmental protection, and compliance with legal standards.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in chemical safety roles?

Professionals in chemical safety often encounter challenges such as ensuring regulatory compliance across rapidly evolving guidelines, effectively communicating risks to both technical and non-technical staff, and maintaining up-to-date safety data and protocols. They must also manage the safe storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous chemicals while fostering a safety-first culture among colleagues. Collaboration with laboratory staff, management, and regulatory agencies is essential, requiring strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

What is the difference between Chemical Safety vs Chemical Technician?

AspectChemical SafetyChemical Technician
Required CredentialsCertifications in safety protocols, OSHA trainingAssociate degree or technical certification in chemistry or related field
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, manufacturing plants, safety officesLaboratories, production facilities, industrial settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by safety departments, compliance teamsEmployed in labs, manufacturing, quality control
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for safety roles, complianceCompared for technical, operational roles

While Chemical Safety professionals focus on developing safety protocols, ensuring regulatory compliance, and training staff to prevent chemical hazards, Chemical Technicians are more involved in conducting experiments, maintaining equipment, and supporting laboratory operations. Both roles are essential in chemical industries but serve different functions related to safety management and technical execution.

Job description

Description
As a GenAI Chemical Safety Expert, you will play a critical role in evaluating and strengthening the safety guardrails of Generative AI systems handling chemical information. You will combine deep subject-matter expertise in the chemical sciences with hands-on prompt research, red-teaming, and model pairing to identify dual-use risks, prevent the material enablement of chemical harms, and ensure AI outputs adhere to strict chemical safety and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Execute rigorous adversarial red-teaming and comprehensive taxonomy audits to uncover latent model vulnerabilities, meticulously scrutinizing AI-generated content for toxicological precision, dual-use implications, and clandestine synthesis protocols to deliver high-fidelity, actionable intelligence to safety teams.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge on international chemical conventions, precursor controls, and industrial safety standards.
Requirements
Requirements
  • Location: Must be located in and authorized to work within the United States (excluding Illinois and Texas).
  • Education: Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Toxicology, Materials Science, or a related chemical science (Master's degree with 5+ years of experience considered).
  • Subject-Matter Expertise: Deep understanding of reaction mechanisms, chemical synthesis, toxicological risk, and chemical security standards.
  • AI Safety Aptitude: Comfort and experience with hands-on prompt research, adversarial prompt generation, and evaluating model output safety.
  • Critical Analysis: Ability to spot subtle evasive phrasing, chemical pseudonym usage, or step-by-step synthesis instructions embedded in seemingly benign queries.
  • Communication: Strong technical writing skills to document findings, rank risk severities, and inform alignment decisions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of AI prompt engineering concepts and practices, including adversarial prompt writing
  • Familiarity with frontier AI safety benchmarks, evaluation frameworks, and ethical guidelines for GenAI.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following chemical risk areas:
  • Chemical Synthesis: Deep understanding of reaction pathways, precursor controls, dual-use chemical synthesis, and illicit acquisition/diversion pathways.
  • Toxicology: Practical knowledge of toxicological mechanisms, aerosolization, exposure pathways, and chemical hazards.
  • Chemical Security: Familiarity with Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) controls, analytical forensics/detection systems, and emergency decontamination frameworks.

The salary range for this role in the US is $150K - $178K - Range may vary based on experience. Salary at the time of offer will be commensurate with experience.
