Job description

Job Summary:

The Sanitation Associate supports site wide Sanitation in the execution, monitoring, and verification of the site sanitation program to ensure compliance with BRCGS Food Safety, regulatory requirements, and company food safety and quality standards. This role is responsible for performing and assisting with sanitation activities, following documented Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs), supporting cross department functions. Maintain a food safety, organized and sanitary work environment for the facility. Reports to sanitation leadership on the shift, under lead, supervisor, and manager in department.

Key Responsibilities:

Sanitation Operations

  • Execute assigned sanitation tasks to ensure all production equipment, utensils, and facility areas are cleaned and sanitized according to approved SSOPs and Master Sanitation Schedules.
  • Verify completion of sanitation tasks and escalate issues related to incomplete or ineffective cleaning.
  • Ensure sanitation activities are completed within required timeframes to support production schedules without compromising food safety.
  • Support once appropriately trained: Dismantling, cleaning, inspection, and reassemble complex production equipment to ensure effective removal of product residues and sanitation hazards
  • Food Safety & BRCGS Compliance
  • Follow all documented food safety, sanitation, GMP, and hygiene requirements in alignment with BRCGS standards.
  • Use only approved chemicals and cleaning agents at validated concentrations, following SSOPs, chemical labels, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Support sanitation verification activities, including visual inspections and documented checks, and report non-conformances.
  • Maintain accurate and legible sanitation records, logs, and checklists as required by the site's food safety management system.

Leadership & Oversight

  • Report to site sanitation leadership and follow assigned sanitation tasks, priorities, and schedules.
  • Perform sanitation duties in accordance with established SSOPs, GMPs, and food safety requirements, ensuring all expectations are met.
  • Communicate sanitation issues, equipment concerns, or deviations from procedures promptly to sanitation leadership.
  • Work collaboratively with the sanitation team and other departments to support effective sanitation execution and food safety compliance.

Training & Communication

  • Complete sanitation employee training on SSOPs, chemical handling, equipment cleaning procedures, GMPs, and personal hygiene requirements.
  • Communicate sanitation priorities, issues, clearly with the Sanitation Lead, management, and cross-functional teams.

Safety & Chemical Control

  • Comply with all site safety policies, including lockout/tagout, confined space, chemical handling, and PPE requirements.
  • Ensure proper use and care of personal protective equipment and request replacement of damaged or missing safety supplies.
  • Report safety hazards, near misses, and incidents immediately.

Inventory & Continuous Improvement

  • Assist with monitoring sanitation chemical and supply inventory and notify management of shortages or replenishment needs.
  • Support continuous improvement of sanitation practices by identifying opportunities to enhance cleaning effectiveness, efficiency, or compliance.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in food manufacturing sanitation or a similar regulated environment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation procedures, SSOPs, GMPs, chemical handling, and food safety principles.
  • Ability to read, write, and accurately complete sanitation documentation.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to guide and instruct sanitation personnel.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, accountability, and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, overtime, and swing shifts.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to lift, push, or pull items weighing over 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment, scissor lifts, ladders, and boom lifts as required.
  • Willingness to work in wet, humid, hot, cold, dusty, or messy environments.
  • Required use of PPE, including chemical-resistant gear and other safety equipment.
