What is a chemical engineering internship?

A Chemical Engineering Internship is a temporary position that provides hands-on experience in applying chemical engineering principles in industry or research settings. Interns may work in areas such as process design, product development, safety analysis, or quality control. They assist engineers with experiments, data analysis, and troubleshooting while gaining practical skills. The internship helps students or recent graduates enhance their technical knowledge and improve problem-solving abilities. It also provides networking opportunities and insight into potential career paths in chemical engineering.

What kinds of tasks and projects can I expect to work on during a chemical engineering internship?

As a Chemical Engineering Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on and analytical tasks, such as assisting with laboratory experiments, performing data analysis, supporting process optimization projects, and preparing technical documentation or reports. Interns often work under the guidance of senior engineers and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on real-world challenges related to chemical manufacturing, environmental compliance, or product development. You may also have opportunities to learn about safety standards, quality control, and industry regulations, gaining exposure to both day-to-day operations and larger project cycles. This practical experience is designed to help you develop technical skills, professional communication abilities, and an understanding of what a career in chemical engineering involves.

Can I do internships as a chemical engineering student?

Yes, chemical engineering students can pursue internships to gain practical experience in areas such as process design, safety protocols, and laboratory work. Internships are typically offered during summer or academic breaks and may require relevant coursework or technical skills like proficiency with simulation software or laboratory equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a chemical engineering internship, and why are they important?

To excel in a Chemical Engineering Internship, candidates typically need a solid grounding in chemical engineering principles, laboratory techniques, and data analysis, often demonstrated through progress in a chemical engineering degree program. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen Plus or CHEMCAD), laboratory instrumentation, and safety protocols is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work well in teams help interns contribute effectively to ongoing projects. These competencies ensure interns can quickly adapt, maintain safety standards, and provide meaningful support in real-world industrial or research environments.

Responsibilities

This role emphasizes design enablement and advanced packaging architecture, working closely with upstream design teams. It differs from the Advanced Packaging role, which focuses on manufacturing execution and process development. Both roles collaborate closely on the same team but have distinct responsibilities.

Join our team to drive development and industrialization of advanced packaging technologies for next-generation System-in-Package (SiP) modules integrated with microwave and mmWave subsystems across Keysight, serving multiple industries such as wireless communications, aerospace, and automotive. This role is at the intersection of design development and process innovation, with a strong emphasis on heterogeneous integration—bringing together diverse semiconductor technologies into a single, high-performance package.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with design teams to define packaging architectures and integration strategies.
  • Develop design rules and guidelines for manufacturability and reliability.
  • Evaluate new materials, interconnect technologies, and advanced packaging concepts.
  • Perform feasibility studies and risk assessments for new designs.
  • Partner with process and integration engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure smooth technology transfer.
  • Support prototype builds and analyze performance data to refine design approaches.
  • Drive innovation and lead projects in heterogeneous integration and advanced packaging for emerging markets like 6G.
  • Drive technical and business process optimizations to meet Key Performance Indicators (KPI) targets and metrics.
  • Manage multiple priorities, assess risks and tradeoffs, propose and implement solutions to mitigate risks.
  • Regularly report progress and risks to cross-functional partners and upper management.

Qualifications
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field
  • Must have 3+ years of applicable semiconductor manufacturing industry experience (applicable internship/lab work/research experience will be considered)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across design, process, and manufacturing teams
  • Excellent communication skills for technical discussions and cross-functional alignment

Preferred Expertise

  • Semiconductor packaging design and integration
  • Design for manufacturing and reliability
  • Advanced interconnect technologies (flip-chip, thermocompression bonding)
  • Materials science for packaging applications
  • Statistical analysis and design of experiments (DOE)
  • Familiarity with SiP (System in Package), SMT, and heterogeneous integration
