How much do chemical analysis jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 2, 2026, the average hourly pay for chemical analysis in the United States is $30.19, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $26.92 and $36.78 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is chemical analysis?

Chemical analysis is the process of identifying the chemical composition and structure of substances. This can involve both qualitative analysis, which determines what chemicals are present, and quantitative analysis, which measures how much of each component is present. Chemical analysis is fundamental in industries such as pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and food safety, helping ensure products meet quality and regulatory standards. Techniques used include spectroscopy, chromatography, and titration, among others.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in chemical analysis, and why are they important?

To thrive in Chemical Analysis, you need a solid background in chemistry, analytical techniques, and laboratory protocols, usually supported by a relevant degree such as chemistry or chemical engineering. Familiarity with instruments like HPLC, GC-MS, spectrophotometers, and knowledge of data analysis software are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting results and collaborating with colleagues. These skills ensure accurate, reliable analyses that drive research, product development, and regulatory compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in chemical analysis roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in chemical analysis often encounter challenges such as ensuring sample integrity, managing complex instrumentation, and interpreting nuanced data accurately. Working in fast-paced environments, they must also stay updated with evolving analytical techniques and strict regulatory standards. Addressing these challenges involves continual professional development, strong attention to detail, effective time management, and regular collaboration with chemists, lab technicians, and quality assurance teams to troubleshoot and validate results.

What is the difference between Chemical Analysis vs Chemical Laboratory Technician?

AspectChemical AnalysisChemical Laboratory Technician
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in chemistry or related fieldAssociate degree or diploma in laboratory technology
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, quality control, manufacturingLaboratories, production facilities, quality assurance
Job FocusPerforming detailed chemical tests and analysisAssisting with sample preparation and routine testing
Industry UsagePharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, food industryManufacturing, quality control, environmental testing

While both roles involve working with chemicals, Chemical Analysis focuses on conducting detailed chemical tests and interpreting results, often requiring a higher level of education. Chemical Laboratory Technicians support these processes through sample preparation and routine testing, typically with less advanced credentials. Both roles are essential in industries like pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and environmental testing.
