Job description

About Calabro Cheese

Calabro Cheese Corporation has been crafting premium, handcrafted Italian cheeses for over 60 years. From our signature ricotta to fresh mozzarella and specialty imports, we supply restaurants, retailers, and distributors across the country. As we continue to grow, we’re looking for sharp logistics professionals who take as much pride in their work as we do in ours.

**This position is open to candidates currently residing in Connecticut only. Applicants must be located within 15 miles of East Haven, CT. Candidates outside this area will not be considered.**

About the Role

As our Freight Operations Coordinator, you’ll be the engine behind getting Calabro’s products where they need to go — on time, in perfect condition, and at the right cost. You’ll coordinate refrigerated and specialty freight movements, work closely with our carrier and distributor network, and make sure our cold chain never breaks. You’ll partner daily with the Warehouse Manager to align inbound and outbound logistics with warehouse operations, ensuring smooth handoffs from the floor to the road. This is a hands-on, high-accountability role where your attention to detail directly impacts product quality and customer satisfaction.

What You’ll Do
  • Coordinate refrigerated (reefer) and temperature-controlled freight — domestic LTL, FTL, and local/regional distribution — ensuring cold chain integrity from dock to delivery
  • Schedule and confirm carrier pickups and deliveries, including distributor, retailer, and foodservice customer accounts
  • Track shipments in real time, proactively resolving delays, temperature excursions, or carrier exceptions before they become customer problems
  • Communicate with carriers, brokers, and third-party logistics partners to confirm capacity, rates, and transit times
  • Prepare and review shipping documentation — BOLs, packing lists, delivery confirmations, and product temperature logs
  • Work closely with the Warehouse Manager to coordinate inbound and outbound freight, align dock schedules, and ensure seamless handoffs between warehouse operations and carrier pickups
  • Partner with production and sales teams to align shipment schedules with production output and customer order cycles
  • Monitor freight costs, audit carrier invoices, and flag billing discrepancies for resolution
  • Maintain accurate records in our logistics and ERP systems; support reporting on delivery performance and freight spend
  • Help manage returns and claims for damaged, refused, or short-shipped perishable orders
  • Support import coordination for specialty cheese and ingredient sourcing from European suppliers when needed
What We’re Looking For

Required:

  • 1–3 years of experience in freight, logistics, transportation, or supply chain — food, perishables, or refrigerated logistics experience is a strong plus
  • Understanding of cold chain requirements and temperature-sensitive shipping protocols
  • Strong communicator — comfortable managing relationships with carriers, customers, and internal teams
  • Organized and detail-driven; able to manage multiple active shipments and deadlines simultaneously
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel; experience with a TMS or ERP system a plus
  • A sense of urgency — you flag problems early and follow through until they’re resolved

Nice to Have:

  • Experience in food distribution, dairy, specialty grocery, or perishables logistics
  • Familiarity with FSMA, HACCP, or food safety compliance as it relates to transportation
  • Spanish bilingual a plus
  • Knowledge of import logistics or customs documentation
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • A stable, family-rooted company with a strong reputation in the specialty food industry
  • A collaborative team environment where your contributions are noticed
Why Calabro

We’re not a faceless corporation — we’re a family business with deep roots and a genuine passion for what we make. Our logistics team plays a direct role in protecting the quality our customers count on. If you want to work somewhere your work matters and there’s room to build a real career, we’d love to meet you.
