Your Opportunity + Impact

The Sr. Hydraulic Designer applies foundational to intermediate hydraulic engineering principles to support the development of drainage, stormwater, and hydraulic designs for transportation projects. This role performs design calculations, prepares technical reports, develops plan sets, and supports project decisions under the guidance of senior hydraulic engineers. The Hydraulic Designer will work extensively on NCDOT bridge and culvert replacement projects, drainage design, and hydrologic/hydraulic modeling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilizes CADD and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) to produce accurate, high‑quality hydraulic design drawings, drainage layouts, and plan sheets.
  • Performs HEC‑RAS 1D modeling for culverts and bridges; 2D modeling experience is a plus.
  • Supports NCDOT bridge and culvert replacement projects, including hydraulic reports, scour analysis, and coordination with roadway and structures teams.
  • Develops NCDOT drainage designs, including storm drain systems, ditches, channels, and stormwater management features.
  • Uses ORD Drainage and/or GeoPak Drainage to model drainage systems and prepare hydraulic design deliverables.
  • Reviews work for accuracy, incorporates redline corrections, and performs backchecks to ensure compliance with NCDOT standards and project requirements.
  • Prepares and reviews specifications, evaluates submittals, and assists with project documentation and submissions.
  • Coordinates the development of multi‑discipline drawing sets, collaborating with technical, administrative, and design staff.
  • Promotes and adheres to quality assurance and quality control processes to enhance deliverable quality and minimize design errors.
  • Researches, interprets, and applies NCDOT design standards, regulations, codes, and permitting requirements.
  • Assists in performing hydraulic design calculations, quantity takeoffs, technical specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Independently develops standard hydraulic project details under direction and ensures consistency across deliverables.
  • Reviews shop drawings submitted by contractors to verify technical accuracy and adherence to design intent.

Education and Experience

  • Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Experience: 2–6 years of hydraulic design experience, preferably with NCDOT bridge & culvert replacement projects. Proficiency with CADD / OpenRoads Designer (ORD), ORD Drainage and/or GeoPak Drainage, and HEC-RAS modeling.
  • Licensure/Certification: Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong desire to expand hydraulic engineering knowledge and take on increasing responsibilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; able to work independently and collaboratively within a project team.
