What is a character design internship?

A Character Design Internship is a temporary position, often for students or recent graduates, where you gain hands-on experience creating and developing characters for animation, video games, comics, or other media. Interns typically work alongside professional character designers to learn industry techniques, contribute ideas, and build a portfolio. This role may involve sketching, digital illustration, storyboarding, and collaborating with other departments to bring characters to life. The internship is a valuable stepping stone for those looking to enter the creative industry as a character designer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a character design intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Character Design Intern, you need strong drawing and illustration skills, a portfolio showcasing original character concepts, and preferably coursework or a degree in art, animation, or a related field. Familiarity with digital illustration tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Procreate is typically expected. Creativity, adaptability, and effective communication help you collaborate with team members and bring unique ideas to life. These skills ensure you can create compelling characters that align with project goals and resonate with audiences.

What are some common challenges faced during a character design internship, and how can I overcome them?

One common challenge in a Character Design Internship is balancing creative expression with adhering to existing brand guidelines or client feedback. Interns often need to revise their designs multiple times to align with the artistic vision of a project or studio. Collaboration and open communication with art directors and other team members are essential for success. To overcome these challenges, be receptive to feedback, stay organized, and actively seek mentorship from experienced designers within the team.

Job description

At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and Healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives. Our wearable technology and analytics platform help individuals optimize recovery, training, and overall health.
WHOOP is seeking a Senior Product Designer to join the Growth team. You'll focus on crafting world-class digital experiences that drive growth outcomes like acquisition, conversion, and engagement, with an emphasis on e-commerce and core purchase journeys. We're looking for a designer with strong visual fundamentals and a sharp sense for how people make decisions in complex, multi-step flows, someone who can bring clarity to complexity, think in funnels, and use experimentation to continuously improve the experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Own and lead the end-to-end design of critical digital experiences that drive acquisition, conversion, and retention, with a focus on ecommerce experiences.
  • Shape and evolve complex user flows and information architecture to create clear, intuitive paths to conversion as our offerings evolve.
  • Balance near-term execution with long-term thinking by designing improvements that ladder into an evolving platform architecture, ensuring today's decisions set up scalable, cohesive experiences over time.
  • Translate growth opportunities into thoughtful product solutions grounded in user behavior, data insights, and effective design patterns, consistently delivering work with exceptional visual craft.
  • Work closely with product managers, engineers, and data analysts to shape strategy and drive execution, ensuring high-quality implementation and moving initiatives forward with clarity.
  • Work within an experimentation-driven team, using data to inform hypotheses, design A/B tests, and iterate quickly while driving measurable improvements in key conversion metrics and balancing speed and craft.
  • Take ownership of key initiatives by defining problems, shaping direction, and driving work forward with a clear point of view grounded in strong design fundamentals.
  • Leverage AI and emerging tools to accelerate exploration, prototyping, and iteration, bringing a technically curious mindset and comfort working close to implementation.
  • Contribute to WHOOP's design culture by sharing expertise, giving feedback, and helping raise the bar for product quality across the team.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Multiple years of experience designing ecommerce, purchase flows, or other transaction-oriented products, with a deep understanding of how users evaluate, decide, and complete actions within digital experiences (not including co-ops, internships, or academic projects).
  • An exceptional portfolio of shipped digital product work that demonstrates exceptional visual craft, clarity in complex flows, and the ability to deliver production-ready experiences.
  • Proven experience designing for measurable, conversion-focused outcomes such as acquisition, purchase, or retention, with a strong understanding of funnel optimization, experimentation, and using data to inform and evaluate decisions.
  • Demonstrated strength in information architecture and designing end-to-end flows that simplify complexity and guide users through multi-step journeys.
  • Deep proficiency with modern design tools and workflows (Figma, prototyping, component libraries), combined with strong technical fluency and the ability to leverage AI and code-adjacent tools to accelerate design and prototyping, while collaborating closely with engineering to bring ideas to life.
  • Strong ability to own and drive multiple initiatives simultaneously, influencing cross-functional partners and influencing product direction while elevating team craft.
  • Clear decision-maker and communicator who can articulate and defend design decisions using strong design principles, heuristics, and data, building alignment across stakeholders.

Interested in the role, but don't meet every qualification? We encourage you to still apply! At WHOOP, we believe there is much more to a candidate than what is written on paper, and we value character as much as experience.
