Job Description:
Under the limited direction of the Sergeant at Arms, the Assistant Sergeant at Arms assists in maintaining the decorum and security of the legislative chamber and hearing rooms during session. This team of "red coats" help maintain order and security. Candidates with a law enforcement background are highly encouraged to apply. This role offers flexible, part-time scheduling consisting of four-hour shifts. Depending on the schedule, morning shifts will primarily encompass the legislative session, while afternoon shifts will cover committee hearings.
Salary range: $19.227/hour ($39,992/year) up to $21.628/hour ($44,986/year)
Job duties and responsibilities:
  • Regulates access to the legislative chamber
  • Monitors hearing rooms during legislative sessions
  • Secures the legislative membership when the house is under call
  • Transmits messages to and from senators in the legislative chamber
  • Provides direction and information to the public in the rotunda
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements/Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the legislative process
  • Ability to interact with senators, legislative staff, and the public in a tactful and firm manner
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule including working nights and weekends

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of remaining in a stationary position required
  • Must be able to move objects of up to 50 pounds without assistance
