Job description
For more than six decades, the company has served clients throughout California, Oregon, Washington, and nationwide, delivering complex projects across mission-critical, healthcare, education, commercial, industrial, energy, and technology sectors. As the organization continues to grow, the CFO will play a central role in strengthening financial visibility, enhancing forecasting accuracy, supporting risk-based decision-making, and ensuring the capital structure required to support continued expansion.
Reporting directly to the President and working in close partnership with the Chief Operating Officer and executive leadership team, the CFO serves as the organization's senior financial executive and principal advisor on financial strategy, capital stewardship, business performance, and enterprise risk.
This position is intentionally designed as a strategic partner to Operations- not an operator of the business. The CFO's responsibility is to provide financial transparency, accountability, forecasting discipline, and decision support that enables operational leaders to execute effectively while maintaining clear ownership of project and operational outcomes.
Position Purpose
The Chief Financial Officer is responsible for:
- Leading all accounting, finance, treasury, tax, audit, forecasting, and financial reporting functions.
- Providing enterprise-wide financial visibility through accurate reporting, forecasting, and analytics.
- Supporting executive leadership in evaluating growth opportunities, capital investments, and strategic initiatives.
- Strengthening organizational performance through financial discipline and data-driven decision-making.
- Ensuring sufficient liquidity, bonding capacity, and capital resources to support current operations and future growth.
- Building a high-performing finance organization aligned with operational needs.
Strategic Leadership & Capital Stewardship
The CFO will:
- Partner with executive leadership on long-range strategic planning and organizational growth initiatives.
- Provide financial evaluation of acquisitions, expansions, market opportunities, and capital investments.
- Develop and maintain capital allocation strategies aligned with organizational priorities and risk tolerance.
- Evaluate major pursuits, large project opportunities, and enterprise investments through disciplined financial analysis.
- Support the company's continued growth beyond $1 billion in annual revenues.
Administrative & Corporate Oversight
The CFO will provide leadership and oversight for:
- Banking relationships
- Insurance programs and risk financing
- Employee benefit plans
- Retirement and 401(k) programs
- Corporate financial governance
- Other administrative functions supporting the organization's financial health
Operational Partnership & Financial Accountability
The CFO will serve as a trusted financial advisor to Operations while maintaining clearly defined ownership boundaries.
The CFO Will:
- Deliver actionable financial insight that improves business and project decisions.
- Support executive project reviews and major pursuit evaluations.
- Identify emerging financial risks and ensure visibility to leadership.
- Create standardized reporting and analytical tools supporting operational decision-making.
- Challenge assumptions through objective financial analysis and performance metrics.
- Translate financial data into meaningful operational implications related to execution, staffing, profitability, and risk.
- Hold the organization accountable for financial performance relative to plan and forecast.
The CFO Will Not:
- Manage day-to-day operations.
- Direct project execution activities.
- Override operational or estimating decisions.
- Assume responsibility for project delivery outcomes.
Financial Management & Business Performance
The CFO will lead all aspects of financial governance and organizational performance management, including:
- Financial planning and analysis (FP&A)
- Corporate accounting and reporting
- Treasury and cash management
- Banking and lender relationships
- Tax strategy and compliance
- External audits
- Budgeting and forecasting
- Internal controls and financial governance
The CFO will establish and maintain KPI discipline around:
- Gross margin performance
- Margin erosion trends
- Labor productivity impacts
- Backlog quality and risk
- Cash flow management
- Working capital performance
- Forecast reliability
- Return on invested capital
Reporting, Analytics & Performance Visibility
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing executive dashboards and scorecards across regions, business units, and major projects.
- Implementing standardized weekly and monthly reporting frameworks.
- Providing forward-looking project health, margin, and risk visibility.
- Leading job-level forecasting and financial performance reviews.
- Implementing backlog quality measurement and burn-rate analysis tools.
- Supporting major pursuits through pre-bid financial analysis.
- Delivering clear, decision-ready information to executive leadership.
The ideal candidate understands how to create reporting that reflects how operations actually runs the business rather than producing reports disconnected from execution realities.
Capital Management, Banking & Surety
The CFO will:
- Manage liquidity and working capital strategies.
- Oversee banking relationships and financing structures.
- Manage surety relationships and bonding capacity.
- Ensure adequate capital resources support strategic growth objectives.
- Evaluate financial risk associated with major contracts, project portfolios, and capital commitments.
Organization, Systems & Risk Management
The CFO will:
- Build and lead a high-performing finance and accounting organization.
- Develop talent and succession plans within the finance function.
- Implement systems that provide real-time project visibility and analytics.
- Standardize financial processes while preserving operational flexibility.
- Evaluate enterprise risk across projects, contracts, and capital exposure.
- Establish early-warning indicators supporting proactive risk management.
Executive Leadership Support
The CFO is expected to provide executive leadership with:
- Forward-looking company performance analysis.
- Strategic financial recommendations.
- Scenario modeling and decision support.
- Regional and project-level risk visibility.
- Actionable reporting on financial and operational performance trends.
This executive must be capable of distilling complex financial information into concise, actionable insights that support confident, informed decision-making at the executive level.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 15+ years of progressive financial leadership experience within construction, specialty contracting, engineering, industrial, or project-based organizations.

- Preferred experience within businesses approaching or exceeding $1 billion in annual revenue.
- Deep expertise in project-based accounting, construction finance, cash flow management, forecasting, and risk evaluation.
- Demonstrated experience leading large finance and accounting organizations.
Preferred Credentials
- CPA, CMA, MBA, or other relevant advanced financial credentials preferred.
- Experience working with large-scale self-perform construction organizations strongly preferred.
Leadership Characteristics
The successful candidate will be:
- Strategic, yet disciplined in execution.
- Financially rigorous and analytically strong.
- Direct, objective, and data driven.
- Collaborative and relationship oriented.
- Highly engaged while respecting operational ownership.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
- Credible with executive leadership, operations teams, project managers, and field leadership.
- Skilled at building trust through accountability, transparency, and consistency.
- Positive, professional, and effective in cross-functional leadership environments.
Success Measures: First 24 Months
Success in this role will be demonstrated through:
- Improved forecasting accuracy tied directly to operational inputs.
- Enhanced cash flow and working capital performance.
- Increased visibility into project profitability and risk.
- Standardized reporting and performance review processes.
- Faster, data-driven executive decision-making.
- Earlier identification and mitigation of financial risks.
- Strong alignment and clearly defined boundaries between Finance and Operations.
- Financial systems and processes capable of supporting continued growth beyond $1 billion in annual revenue.
