Legal Affairs Intern

National Alcohol Beverage Control Association (NABCA), located in Arlington, VA, was founded in 1938 and is the national trade association representing the jurisdictions that control the distribution and sale of beverage alcohol within their borders. The mission of NABCA is to support member jurisdictions in their efforts to protect public health and safety and ensure responsible and efficient systems for beverage alcohol distribution and sales.

NABCA has an immediate vacancy for a temporary Legal Affairs Intern. The Legal Affairs team is responsible for conducting alcohol policy, legislative, regulatory, and related research in support of the strategic priorities and initiatives of the control jurisdictions. The Legal Affairs Intern will assist with legal research, regulatory tracking, preparing summaries and reports, supporting department projects, etc. The Legal Affairs intern reports to the VP, General Counsel.

Duties: The Legal Affairs Intern performs the following duties:

  • Assist with legal, legislative, and regulatory research projects that support NABCA's strategic priorities and the interests of control jurisdictions.
  • Assist with monitoring and tracking federal and state legislation, regulations, administrative actions, and judicial developments relevant to beverage alcohol regulation.
  • Helps conduct research on a variety of legal matters including, but not limited to nonprofit laws, and regulations, antitrust, licensing, compliance, privacy, etc.
  • Helps conduct literature searches to identify articles, reports, and other pertinent information to inform and support research projects.
  • Assists in compiling information for presentations, member communications, etc.
  • Participates in meetings and completes special projects as requested.

Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a bachelor's or master's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, History, or a related field is required. Active enrollment or intent to enroll in law school is a plus.
  • Prior internship or work experience in a law firm, regulatory agency, or trade association is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities and exceptional research, analytical, and critical-thinking skills are required.
  • Must have experience conducting legislative, regulatory, or legal research. Experience using LexisNexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law, etc. is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with state legislative processes and experience using legislative tracking platforms or legal research databases is strongly preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are essential; must be able to complete multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams is required; experience using Power BI, Tableau, or similar analytics tools preferred.
  • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively in a professional environment.
  • Demonstrated initiative, professionalism, and sound judgment are essential.
