As a leading developer, manufacturer, and global supplier of scientific laboratory products for 100 years, Corning's Life Sciences segment collaborates with researchers seeking new approaches to increase efficiencies, reduce costs and compress timelines in the drug discovery process. Using unique expertise in the fields of materials science, surface science, optics, biochemistry and biology, the segment provides innovative solutions that improve productivity and enable breakthrough discoveries.
The primary purpose of this position is:
Machining and Fabricates tooling, parts, assemblies, guarding, jigs/fixtures for production equipment for sustainable solutions. Job task include making new, modifying, repairing manufacturing components. Components made supports all internal groups: engineering, operations, maintenance, quality, and facilities. Takes an active role in component failure investigation, problem solving, creating sustainable solution. Activities will drive towards the plant goals of safety, quality, schedule, and cost.
This position includes significant duties such as:
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as manual machining equipment (lathes, mills), manual surface grinder, heat treat oven, welder, sheet metal shear and brake to machine or fabricate parts. Using hand tools as needed to fit and assemble parts
  • Machine, alter and repair components to needed specifications from: blueprints, old/worn/broken parts, models, hand sketch, verbal description. Occasionally advising design improves either geometric or material to achieve the desired benefit.
  • Determine machining sequence of operation to complete the job task in a timely manner and meet tolerance requirements with the available equipment and tools. Job task to be completed with minimal supervision.
  • Computes dimension measurements using hand calculations, calculator, or programs such as CAD (Draftsight, Solidworks); using plan layouts to determine assembly methods and sequence of operations. Must be able to compute calculations of simple math and geometry/trigonometry formulas.
  • Able to machine and fabricate using FDA compliant materials like Stainless Steel, Aluminum and Acetal.
  • Utilizing material on hand or request material be ordered for the project, layout the component with standard practices including measures, marks, and scribes materials for machining.
  • Verifies dimensions, clearances, and alignment using measuring devices such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gages, and micrometers to ensure desired precision fit for equipment, assemblies, or components.
  • Work with setup and manufacturing engineers or technicians to troubleshoot component route cause failure, outlining a sustainable repair/replacement path and making critical repairs to release the equipment back to operating at a running state.
  • Performs predictive/preventative maintenance and assists with updating of predictive and preventative maintenance program.
  • Assisting project complete component modifications or custom guarding with new equipment installations to meet equipment validation requirements and timeline.
  • Documenting by methods of hand sketches (using standard views) or red lining the prints the "as built" state of the component and provide engineering if modifications were required.
  • Documenting, organizing and labeling new tooling, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Document daily work logs and track time using Maximo software.
  • Maintaining shop cleanliness in daily and weekly cleanups.
  • Requesting material or tooling when needed for maintaining stock inventory of the machine shop.
  • Team collaboration and Cross training of peers on systems responsible to maintain, ensuring redundancy (operation/minor troubleshooting) in the Machine Shop Group.
  • Performs work in compliance with all national and local codes.
  • Support an on-call weekend rotation and is required to respond to occasional off hours support calls during the week. Call-ins support production needs for hard down equipment with machining/fabricating sustainable replacement parts for the equipment to operate.

Working Conditions:
  • Exposure to industrial machinery, moving parts, electrical and other energy sources
  • Works mostly in a machine shop occasional task will be in the production environment.
  • Well lite, clean working area which follows all safety precautions and regulations.
  • Lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds frequently, 65 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to stand 8 hours per shift.
  • Exposed to fumes and high frequency noise in manufacturing areas.
  • Safety glasses, hearing protection, safety toed shoes, short sleeves are required in the Machine Shop. Dependent on designated area other PPE or requirements include: Gown, hair covering, gloves, safety vest, hard hat. Adheres to plant safety requirements, OSHA and QSR/GMP/ISO guidelines as applicable.

Education:
  • Associates Degree in Tool Trade or Machinist Curriculum or High School Diploma/GED plus experience acquired through a formal Journeyman apprenticeship in tool making or equivalent.

Experience:
  • 7-10+ years experience in machine shop, tool and die making, or industrial maintenance required

The range for this position is $37.00 hourly rate - $40.00 hourly rate. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
