Job description

Job Title: Structural Designer (EIT)
Department: Engineering
Reports to: Structural Lead
GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB
In collaboration with the engineering team and other stakeholders, the Structural Designer develops designs by conceptualizing, creating, analyzing, revising and finalizing "Best for Project" 3D designs, drawings and calculations of complex permanent mine facility infrastructure, temporary shaft sinking gear, material handling, process systems, and above ground facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
HEALTH AND SAFETY
  • Work in compliance with all health and safety rules and regulations for Cementation
  • Be aware of any health and safety hazards or infractions and report same to Health and Safety Department
  • Ensure all applicable safety codes and regulations are met by appropriate design and use of technology
  • Be a champion for safety, advocating safe behaviour while incorporating safety into the designs produced by the group
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This description lists the core responsibilities and duties of the position. Additional duties deemed to be within the incumbent's capabilities, on an as-required basis, might be assigned by management.
    • Perform structural analysis and design of surface and underground mine facilities and infrastructure
    • Generate or direct the generation of preliminary sketches, general arrangement drawings, structural drawings and details, material take-offs or other deliverables that illustrate design intent, while conforming to internal engineering and design standards
    • Collaborate with internal multidisciplinary design, engineering, project management and operations teams to produce "Best for Project" designs that are safe, constructible, operable and maintainable
    • Understand, use, and contribute to department specific standards and templates for the design of steel and concrete structural systems.
    • Develop a working understanding of pertinent codes. This includes IBC, AISC, ASCE, and ACI codes both current and legacy.
    • Under the direction of a licensed engineer, complete and file all necessary calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, special industry guidelines, company and Client standards
    • Complete designs within designated schedule and budget as defined within project requirements
    • Check designs and drawings for function, fit-up, and compliance to internal and regulatory standards both on work you perform and work within the office
    • Develop and grow positive relationships with teams both internal and external to engineering
    • Additional weekly or daily hours, while infrequent, are anticipated and will be required when needed. Personal schedules will be accommodated to the best of our ability.
    • Other duties as assigned
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • This position has the requirement for infrequent travel to project sites, offices, and/or to conduct shop reviews
  • Travel period may range from one day to several weeks and may include overseas assignments
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering or similar
  • Required proficiency in Autodesk Revit
  • 0-4 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in heavy construction, mining, or industrial structures is beneficial
  • Passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Exam
  • Ability and desire to obtain PE in the future
  • Certificate of Completion from an authorized Autodesk Training Center (ATC) accredited program is beneficial
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES
  • Safety oriented
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of design and/or construction processes
  • Ability to learn quickly and willingness to adapt as circumstances change
  • Ability to pay attention to small detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees, owners and subcontractors
  • Ability to read and understand information found in construction documents, plans, and specifications
  • Knowledge and skills in the following software considered an asset:
    • Autodesk Navisworks, AutoCAD, etc.
    • Autodesk Construction Cloud (Forma)
    • Bluebeam Revu
    • MS Office Suite
    • Python, C# or other programming experience beneficial
