Job Summary:
We are looking for one (1) full-time Entry Laboratory Science Professional who is a bright, enthusiastic, organized, kind, and detail-oriented individual to work in Dr. Jen McKey's lab for a 12-month appointment. This is an ideal position for recent graduates looking for post-bac experience before applying to graduate programs (PhD programs, medical school, vet school).
Dr. McKey's lab uses mice and cutting-edge 3D imaging techniques to study the development of the mammalian ovary and the establishment and regulation of adult female fertility. The Entry Laboratory Science Professional will manage genotyping of the McKey lab mouse colony and will contribute to research projects. The Entry Laboratory Science Professional will learn and employ techniques in molecular biology, cell biology, and fertility analysis.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
- Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects.
- Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research data.
- Support the analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting and communicating results.
- Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical test processes and evaluate results produced.
- Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.
- Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary.
- Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed.
- Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well-established guidelines and instructions.
- Review, complete, and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information.
- Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit, and related issues.
- Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
- Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required.
Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
- Mouse colony management includes, but is not limited to: handling, genotyping, weaning, and euthanizing mice.
- Lab management duties include keeping the lab inventory stocked and organized, enforcing environmental health and safety measures, and onboarding new lab members.

The Section of Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado is committed to research that improves child health. Specifically, we have five main objectives:
- Understand the genetic, molecular, and cellular mechanisms that guide normal development
- Determine how normal developmental processes are altered to result in developmental disease and disability
- Identify new diagnostic strategies and molecular and cellular therapies targeted at treatment of childhood disease
- Train the next generation of leaders in developmental and stem cell biology and pediatric disease research
- Serve as a hub for basic and translational child health research that spans the Anschutz Medical Campus research community
To accomplish these objectives, the faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and research staff who comprise the Section of Developmental Biology perform research using stem cell, organoid, and animal experimental models, including Drosophila, zebrafish, and mice. Our investigations focus on several major tissue and organ systems such as the brain, heart, intestine, face, and vascular, olfactory, and immune systems. Our work is leading to a better understanding of childhood disabilities associated with neuropsychiatric disease, Down syndrome, the congenital basis of cardiovascular and facial malformations, and the impact of maternal health on fetal development. Skills and experience attained in this role are well-suited for those considering pursuing post-graduate school. CU Anschutz is a world-class research institution with the opportunity to attend presentations from leading local, national, and international scientists.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
- Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
- Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.
