Job description

GeneFab is seeking a highly skilled Senior Scientist to join our Cell Therapy Process Development team in Alameda, CA. In this role, you will lead the design and optimization of integrated processes, bridging the gap between innovative synthetic biology and phase-appropriate cGMP manufacturing. If you have hands-on experience with automated cell processing and a passion for driving clinical readiness for next-generation genetic medicines, we want to hear from you.
Responsibilities:
  • Design andย perform experiments toย optimizeย integrated processes for cell therapy,ย including:ย evaluation of cell sources, isolation and activation of human immune cells,ย media optimization, viral/non-viral genetic modification, cell expansion,ย cell harvest/fill/finish, and cryopreservation.ย 

  • Cell therapy process scaleup,ย including:ย transition from open processes to closed automated systems,ย understanding analyticalย methods, using a Design of Experiments (DoE) approach,ย and evaluating process choicesย within a Quality by Design (QbD) frameworkย 

  • Exploration ofย new technologiesย or materialsย for process scale-up or improvementsย with quality mindsetย leading to clinical or commercialย readiness.ย ย 

  • Cross-functional collaborations inย project teams toย translate scientific understanding to development ofย phaseย appropriateย cGMPย cell therapy manufacturing unit operations.ย 

  • Lead the design, execution, and analysis of experimental studies for new manufacturing technologies and processesย 

  • Author and review study protocols, technical reports, ELNs, regulatoryย submissions.ย 

  • Support authoring of key documentation to enable technology transfer (e.g.ย sampling plans, batch records, specifications, SOPs, FMEA, flow diagrams, etc.).ย 

  • Help coordinate sample management workflow across Process and Analytical Development teamsย and manage development databaseย 

  • Serve as a technical resource/SMEย for GMP operations (e.g.ย root cause analyses and continuous improvement initiatives)ย 

  • Coordinate and prioritize tasks across multiple projectsย 

  • Maintain familiarity with currentย state-of-the-artย related to cell therapy processesย 

Qualifications:
  • BS/MSย withย 6+ย yearsย orย PhDย withย 4+ย yearsย of experienceย in science/engineeringย ofย biopharmaceutical or cell/gene therapyย process development and technology transferย ย 

  • Hands-on experience with automated cell processing units or platforms (i.e.ย bioreactors,ย automated cell wash, fill and finish) is critical.ย ย 

  • Experience developing andย optimizingย cell therapy processes for GMP productionย with quality mindsetย ย 

  • Strong technical writing and communication skills to support both development and tech transfer applicationsย 

  • Strongย critical thinking,ย organizational skills,ย ability to work in multi-functional project teams, and attention to detailย ย 

  • Experience withย various typesย of cell therapy products (i.e.ย CAR-T, CAR-NK, HSC, MSC) is preferredย 

  • Experience with AI solutionsย forย CGT processesย and working with LIMSย is a plusย ย
