Job Description
AECOM's Environment, Health & Safety team is seeking an experienced Mid-level Environmental Scientist III to join our team and support and manage environmental compliance programs for public- and/or private-sector clients. This mid-level role is ideal for a candidate with a solid regulatory foundation who can work independently on routine compliance tasks while supporting more complex projects under senior staff guidance. The successful candidate will contribute to technical delivery, client support, and internal collaboration within a consulting-oriented environment.
This hybrid position will be based out of our San Jose, CA office.
Key Responsibilities include:
  • Environmental Compliance Support.
  • Support implementation of environmental compliance programs related to federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, TSCA, EPCRA, and state equivalents).
  • Conduct regulatory applicability evaluations, document reviews, and compliance assessments.
  • Assist with preparation of permit applications, compliance plans, reports, and regulatory correspondence.
  • Support environmental audits and follow-up corrective actions under direction of senior staff.
  • Track regulatory changes and assist with compliance strategy updates.
  • Project support & client interaction.
  • Provide day-to-day technical support for environmental compliance projects.
  • Coordinate with project managers and multidisciplinary teams to meet scope, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Participate in client meetings and site visits as needed.
  • Prepare clear, well-organized technical deliverables and summaries for client review.
  • Data Management & Documentation
  • Compile, manage, and analyze environmental compliance data.
  • Support development and maintenance of compliance tracking tools and documentation systems.
  • Ensure project files and records meet internal quality and compliance standards.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, or a related field.
  • 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education focusing on environmental compliance within consulting, industry, or a regulatory agency with strong knowledge of key environmental regulations and compliance frameworks.
  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required.
  • Valid Driver's license is required for this role.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree or professional certification (e.g., CHMM, CEA) is a plus.
  • 6+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education focusing on environmental compliance within consulting, industry, or a regulatory agency with strong knowledge of key environmental regulations and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience preparing technical reports and supporting environmental permitting or compliance activities.
  • Prior experience working in an environmental consulting firm is highly desired.
  • Familiarity with state environmental programs and agency interactions.
  • Experience with compliance auditing, inspections, or regulatory inspections.
  • Proficiency with compliance tracking tools, spreadsheets, or data management systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a project-based environment.
