What are CDL Riggers?

CDL Riggers are skilled professionals who operate heavy machinery and vehicles, such as cranes and trucks, to move, lift, and transport large or heavy loads. They hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and are trained in rigging techniques to ensure loads are secured and moved safely. Their work is essential in construction, manufacturing, and other industries that require the transportation of oversized or heavy equipment. CDL Riggers must follow strict safety protocols and often work as part of a team to coordinate complex lifting and transport operations.

Industry UsageConstruction, shipping, industrial projectsConstruction, shipping, infrastructure projects

Both Cdl Rigger and Crane Operator roles often require CDL licenses and work in construction or industrial environments. While riggers focus on attaching loads and ensuring safety during lifting, crane operators handle the operation of cranes. These roles are complementary and often work together on the same projects, but their specific skills and certifications differ slightly.

What are some of the unique challenges CDL Riggers face when coordinating heavy equipment moves on job sites?

CDL Riggers often encounter challenges such as navigating tight spaces, ensuring proper load securement, and maintaining constant communication with other crew members to execute safe lifts and transports. The role requires a strong understanding of rigging techniques, safety protocols, and the ability to quickly adapt to changing site conditions. Effective collaboration with crane operators, site supervisors, and other trades is essential to ensure that all equipment moves are completed efficiently and without incident.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CDL Rigger, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CDL Rigger, you need a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), knowledge of rigging techniques, and experience with heavy equipment operation and load securement. Familiarity with rigging hardware, load charts, and OSHA safety protocols, along with certifications like NCCCO or Rigging and Signalperson credentials, are typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help ensure safe and efficient operations on job sites. These skills and qualifications are vital to prevent accidents, maintain compliance, and ensure successful completion of lifting and transport tasks.

Job description

Guy M. Turner, Inc., one of the nation's leading crane and rigging companies, is hiring a CDL Class A Driver to join our team in our Durham, NC location. This is not a typical driving job - in addition to operating lowboy, step deck, and flatbed trailers, you'll work hands-on in the field to support crane operations and/or rigging/machinery moving projects. While most jobs are local, some overnight travel is required.

Note: This is a physical, hands-on role. Drivers are fully involved in the crane and rigging work – not just trucking.

What You'll Do:

  • Haul crane components, heavy equipment, and heavy machinery using a variety of trailers (step deck, flatbed, lowboy, etc.)
  • Assist with crane assembly/disassembly and rigging/machinery moving work
  • Operate forklifts, scissor lifts, and man lifts
  • Work closely with crane & rigging crews in a fast-paced jobsite environment
  • Work in varied jobsite environments (indoors/outdoors, at heights, confined spaces)

What We're Looking For:

  • Valid CDL Class A and DOT Medical Card
  • CDL driving experience required with step deck, lowboy, and/or flatbed trailers
  • Must be able to work all shifts, including nights and weekends
  • Must be available to travel out of town as needed
  • Able to lift, carry and move 50–75 lbs and perform manual labor
  • Team-oriented and safety-focused

You Can Expect the Following:

  • 25% driving
  • 50% manual labor (assembly and disassembly of cranes, rigging/machinery moving duties)
  • 25% "hurry up and wait"

We offer competitive pay, overtime, travel per diem, and excellent benefits.
