What is a CDC intern?

A CDC intern is a student or recent graduate who participates in an internship program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These internships provide hands-on experience in public health, research, policy, and communication, allowing interns to work alongside professionals on real-world projects. CDC internships are designed to help individuals develop skills, gain insight into public health careers, and contribute to important public health initiatives. Opportunities are available for undergraduates, graduate students, and postgraduates in a variety of fields.

What types of projects and tasks can a CDC intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a CDC Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects related to public health research, data analysis, program implementation, and communication initiatives. Interns often assist with literature reviews, data collection and management, supporting outbreak investigations, and preparing reports or presentations. The work is typically collaborative, with interns working alongside experienced CDC professionals and multidisciplinary teams. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into public health practices and offers networking opportunities that can benefit your future career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CDC intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CDC Intern, you need a strong academic background in public health, biology, or a related field, often with enrollment in or recent graduation from a relevant degree program. Familiarity with data analysis tools (such as Excel, SAS, or R), research methodologies, and sometimes IRB or human subjects research certification are typically valued. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability help interns effectively contribute to multidisciplinary projects and navigate a dynamic workplace. These skills are essential for successfully supporting public health initiatives, learning from real-world experience, and making a tangible impact during the internship.

Does the CDC offer internships?

Yes, the CDC offers internships such as the CDC Undergraduate Public Health Scholars Program and other opportunities for students and recent graduates. These internships typically involve public health research, data analysis, and health communication, often requiring application through the CDC's official internship portal and adherence to specific eligibility criteria.
