Job Description

the Control Room Operator will work on-site at a Traffic Management Center (TMC), located in Milwaukee, WI.  The environment is a technological hub for traffic operations, which uses a variety of different technologies and tools for the purpose of enhancing safety and mobility. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring Wisconsin roadways and providing real-time traveler information for planned and unplanned events impacting traffic and congestion using various Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) tools such as closed-circuit television, changeable message signs, ramp meters, traffic detectors, etc.
  • Real-time assessment of all incoming traffic data and prioritization of content and traffic reporting needs
  • Regular communication with statewide first responders, law enforcement dispatchers, field technicians, and public service agencies to determine the severity of traffic incidents for dissemination to the motoring public.
  • Locating, verifying, and monitoring of unplanned incidents, construction, special events and any other issues impacting traffic flow and/or motorist safety
  • Position will be required to become Flex Lane certified and maintain Flex Lane certification. Step in to operate Flex Lane when needed.
  • Maintains traffic incident reports for incidents occurring on WI state highways.
  • Assesses large volumes of data from a wide variety of sources to detect possible traffic incidents.
  • Provides real-time status and situational awareness updates on control room activities such as significant incidents, special events, construction, etc.
  • Responsible for monitoring the functionality of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices including CCTV cameras, message boards, detectors, ramp meters, etc. and creating maintenance requests for devices.
  • Perform functions similar to an emergency dispatcher within a call center environment dispatching various resources.
  • Responsible for the quality, accuracy and timeliness of all information disseminated.
  • Attend training and staff meetings as requested, possibly outside of normal schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to work on a shift basis at a 24/7/365 operation center that includes weekends, holidays, and coverage outside of regularly scheduled hours.
  • Position requires candidate to pass a client required Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) background check.
