What is a CCGT power plant?

CCGT stands for Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power plants. These facilities generate electricity by combining a gas turbine cycle with a steam turbine cycle, using the waste heat from the gas turbine to produce steam that drives the steam turbine. This process significantly increases the overall efficiency of power generation, often exceeding 60%. CCGT plants are widely used due to their high efficiency, relatively low emissions, and ability to quickly respond to changes in electricity demand.

What are some common challenges faced by operators in a CCGT power plant, and how can they be managed?

Operators in a CCGT power plant often encounter challenges such as maintaining optimal efficiency during load changes, monitoring complex control systems, and ensuring strict compliance with safety and environmental regulations. Balancing the integration of gas and steam turbines requires attention to detail and quick problem-solving skills, especially during unexpected equipment issues or start-up/shutdown procedures. Regular training, adherence to standard operating procedures, and effective communication with maintenance and engineering teams are essential for managing these challenges and ensuring smooth plant operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CCGT power plant operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CCGT (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine) Power Plant Operator, you need strong knowledge of power plant operations, turbine systems, and safety protocols, often supported by a degree or certification in mechanical or electrical engineering. Familiarity with distributed control systems (DCS), SCADA systems, and relevant technical certifications such as NIULPE or equivalent is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing plant performance and responding to emergencies. These competencies are essential for ensuring efficient, safe, and reliable energy generation in a high-stakes environment.

What is the difference between Ccgt Power Plant vs Gas Turbine Technician?

AspectCcgt Power PlantGas Turbine Technician
CertificationsRelevant power plant operation and safety certificationsGas turbine operation and maintenance certifications
Work EnvironmentOperates within combined cycle power plants, handling multiple systemsFocuses on gas turbine systems, often in power plants or industrial facilities
Industry UsageCommonly employed in power generation facilitiesUsed in power plants, industrial plants, and maintenance services

The Ccgt Power Plant and Gas Turbine Technician roles share overlapping skills in power plant operations and maintenance. However, the Ccgt Power Plant role involves managing combined cycle systems, while Gas Turbine Technicians focus specifically on gas turbines. Both roles require similar certifications and are vital in power generation industries, but their scope and focus differ based on equipment and system specialization.

Job description

Quanta Power Solutions brings together the industry-leading capabilities and resources of Quanta's operating companies to deliver complete EPC solutions. Our integrated approach spans power generation, battery energy storage, renewables, transmission, substation, and underground infrastructure — from concept to commissioning, we execute complex power infrastructure projects with the speed, certainty, and operational excellence our customers depend on.

At Quanta Power Solutions, we are driven by a culture of safety, integrity, and disciplined execution — and we're building a team that shares that commitment.

Quanta Power Solutions is seeking an Assistant Site Manager to support the Site Manager in the successful execution of large-scale Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) and power generation projects. This role assists in coordinating all phases of field construction, including civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation & controls (I&C), and commissioning activities associated with utility-scale power plants.

The Assistant Site Manager plays a key role in daily site operations, helping ensure safe, quality-driven execution while supporting schedule, budget, and productivity goals across the project lifecycle.

  • Assist in coordinating site construction activities across all power plant disciplines, including civil, structural steel, mechanical equipment, piping, electrical, and I&C systems.
  • Support the Site Manager in overseeing construction of major power generation assets such as gas turbines, steam turbines, HRSGs (Heat Recovery Steam Generators), balance-of-plant systems, cooling systems, and associated infrastructure.
  • Coordinate subcontractors, craft labor, vendors, and field engineering teams to ensure work is executed safely and efficiently.
  • Help manage project schedules, work sequencing, and turnover milestones to support successful startup and commissioning activities.
  • Monitor construction progress and ensure compliance with project specifications, quality requirements, environmental regulations, and safety standards.
  • Assist in identifying and resolving field issues related to constructability, interfaces between disciplines, productivity, and schedule impacts.
  • Participate in site inspections, progress meetings, turnover walks, punch list development, and commissioning readiness reviews.
  • Support system completion, testing, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and plant startup activities.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including daily reports, change management records, turnover packages, and as-built documentation.
  • Assist with workforce planning, site logistics, material management, and equipment coordination.
  • Promote a strong safety culture that aligns with Quanta Power Solutions' commitment to incident-free project execution.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Experience & Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of construction experience with at least 3+ years supporting utility-scale power generation, industrial construction, energy infrastructure, or EPC projects.
  • Experience supporting construction of large industrial facilities with multiple disciplines and subcontractors.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation systems commonly found in power generation facilities.
  • Familiarity with combined cycle power plants, gas turbine systems, steam turbine systems, HRSGs, balance-of-plant equipment, or related energy infrastructure projects preferred.
  • Experience using project management and construction software such as Procore, Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of construction safety regulations, quality control processes, and commissioning practices.

Skills

  • Strong leadership potential with a desire to grow into greater construction management responsibilities.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, construction, commissioning, and client teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing project requirements.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on quality, safety, and schedule performance.
  • Ability to build productive working relationships with craft labor, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.

Travel Requirements

  • Up to 100% travel based on project assignment and business needs.

  • Competitive Compensation
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) & Holiday Pay
  • Comprehensive Health Coverage
