Job description
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (tenure track), Indigenous Faculty Open Search
St. Thomas More College (STM) invites applications from qualified individuals who identify as Indigenous and whose teaching and research interests complement and strengthen our existing areas of strength. STM has teaching and research needs in the departments of history, religious studies, languages, literatures, & cultural studies, economics, political studies, and psychology, as well as in academic areas unique to STM such as Catholic studies, peace studies, and social justice. This tenure-track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, has a projected start date of July 1, 2027.
STM is committed to employment equity and diversity, and Indigenous engagement is a strategic priority. As part of this commitment, we plan to increase the number of Indigenous faculty within the college, while supporting them to build community, collaboration, and career success. This position is, therefore, exclusively aimed at individuals identifying as Indigenous. Candidates are asked to identify as Indigenous in their application and are invited to share how their Indigenous heritage and community connections will inform their teaching, research, scholarly, and/or artistic activities. This search process relies on Section 48 of The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code to give preference in employment to a person of Indigenous ancestry for this position.
Requirements for the position include a Ph.D. or equivalent (if near completion by the time of the appointment, the applicant may be considered for a conditional appointment) in one of STM's academic disciplines and an ability or potential to excel in teaching, research, scholarly, and/or artistic work, undergraduate and graduate supervision, as well as administrative and professional service. The ability to contribute to one of STM's distinctive academic areas (e.g., philosophy; critical perspectives on social justice and the common good; Catholic studies; peace studies; religious studies) would be considered an asset. Candidates must demonstrate a willingness to connect their scholarship to the mission of St. Thomas More College.
STM is a Catholic liberal arts college in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and is federated with the University of Saskatchewan (USask). The university is located on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Metis and on the banks of the kisiskaciwani-sipiy (also known as the South Saskatchewan River). USask and STM are part of a millennia-long tradition of people gathering on these banks to teach, to learn, and to build community. The city of Saskatoon has a diverse and thriving economic base, a vibrant arts community, and a full range of leisure opportunities.
STM collaborates with USask departments to offer undergraduate and graduate programs in the humanities and social sciences, providing a rich interdisciplinary environment for scholarship. In STM's mission statement, we affirm that "through our teaching we are devoted to a partnership of learning and growth with our students which addresses the synthesis of faith and reason in all aspects of the human condition." Over time, this emphasis on reflective learning has cultivated a deep interest in social justice, expressed through STM's unique interdisciplinary programs (e.g., Catholic studies; critical perspectives on social justice and the common good; peace studies), extracurricular events and activities, and faculty research. Over the past six years, STM's Indigenous initiatives have been led by Harry Lafond, STM's first Providence kanaweyihtakosowin Chair in Indigenous Spirituality and Reconciliation. STM's endowed Chair in Indigenous Spirituality and Reconciliation was formally inaugurated in 2016, and the work of the Chair is guided by an Indigenous Advisory Circle associated with the Chair. Collectively, our faculty have fostered productive research and service partnerships within the Indigenous community. Our college also offers a wide range of community service-learning opportunities for students. STM is in close proximity to the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre at USask, which is dedicated to supporting the personal, social, cultural, and academic success of Metis, First Nations, and Inuit students. Additional information about STM and the University of Saskatchewan is available at https://stmcollege.ca.
The salary band for the Assistant Professor rank for the 2027-2028 academic year is: 113,527 to 135,535. We also offer a comprehensive benefits plan.
Application Materials: Applications are to include the following materials: a cover letter describing the applicant's qualifications and teaching and research strengths; a statement of Indigenous identification; a curriculum vitae (include current email address, phone number, and home address at which the applicant can be reached); teaching dossier (including teaching philosophy, copies of student and peer evaluations, sample syllabi, and other materials as appropriate); research dossier (including a sample of academic writing); confidential letters of reference from three academic referees (please have them sent directly to deansoffice@stmcollege.ca; and transcripts of the qualifying degree. While not a requirement, a statement that thoughtfully reflects on student feedback and demonstrates a commitment to pedagogical growth would be most welcome.
Review of Applications will begin November 16, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled. Please forward application materials via email to: Dean's Office, St. Thomas More College, 1437 College Drive, Saskatoon, SK, S7N 0W6, at deansoffice@stmcollege.ca. Interviews of qualified applicants and recommendations for appointment will be the responsibility of individual departments within the college. Applicants, therefore, should indicate the department in which they seek appointment (economics; history; languages, literatures, and cultural studies; psychology; religion and culture, and political studies) and their disciplinary area of expertise. Hiring decisions will be based on the applicant's academic qualifications, record and strengths, along with their potential and willingness to support the strategic priorities of the college and relevant department, as well as the department's ability to support the candidate. Final hiring decisions will be contingent on the projected availability of ongoing annual funding and related expenses.
St. Thomas More College is committed to employment equity, diversity, and inclusion, and is proud to support career opportunities for Indigenous peoples to reflect the community we serve. We are dedicated to recruiting individuals who will enrich our work and learning environments. Only Indigenous candidates will be considered for this position. USask's verification of Indigenous Membership/Citizenship process will be applied. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, in accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority. We are committed to providing accommodations to those with a disability or medical necessity. If you require an accommodation to participate in the recruitment process, please notify us and we will work together on the accommodation request. While we appreciate all interest in these positions, only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
