What is a Cat Scale?

A Cat Scale job typically involves working with the CAT Scale Company, which provides certified truck weighing services at truck stops. Employees may be responsible for operating and maintaining weigh stations, assisting truck drivers with weigh-ins, and ensuring accurate weight readings. This role is important for truckers to comply with legal weight limits and avoid fines. Some positions may also include customer service and data entry tasks.

What does a Cat Scale attendant do?

A typical shift for a Cat Scale attendant or technician involves overseeing the weighing of commercial vehicles, ensuring the proper use of scale systems, and assisting drivers with any questions or issues related to weight tickets. Attendants often work independently or as part of a small team, balancing periods of steady activity with downtime depending on truck traffic. The role requires frequent communication with drivers, maintenance of the weighing equipment, and occasional troubleshooting of scale technology. This environment offers hands-on experience interacting with the transportation industry and valuable customer service opportunities, with the potential to advance into supervisory or facility management roles.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a Cat Scale position?

To thrive in a Cat Scale attendant or technician role, you need strong attention to detail, basic math skills, and familiarity with commercial truck weighing procedures, usually supported by customer service experience. Working knowledge of electronic weighing systems and point-of-sale (POS) systems is typically required, with on-the-job training often provided for proprietary Cat Scale equipment. Effective communication, problem-solving, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are key soft skills for delivering reliable service to truck drivers. These skills are essential to ensure accurate weighing, efficient operations, and positive customer experiences in often fast-paced environments.
