Cat Boarding information

What is cat boarding?

A Cat Boarding job involves caring for cats while their owners are away. Responsibilities typically include feeding, cleaning litter boxes, administering medications if needed, and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment. Some positions may also require engaging with cats through play and social interaction. The goal is to provide a stress-free experience for both the cats and their owners.

What does a typical day look like in cat boarding?

A typical day in cat boarding involves feeding and cleaning up after cats, monitoring their health and behavior, administering medication as needed, and maintaining clean, comfortable enclosures. Staff often spend time playing with or comforting cats to reduce stress during their stay, as well as communicating with pet owners about their pets' well-being. You may also be responsible for intake and check-out processes, record keeping, and occasionally assisting with facility cleaning. This role usually involves working both individually and as part of a small team to ensure all cats receive attentive care. Shifts can include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the facility’s operating hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed for cat boarding?

To thrive in a Cat Boarding role, you need experience in animal care, knowledge of feline behavior, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with pet care software, safe handling techniques, and basic first aid or pet CPR certification is highly valued. Patience, keen observation, and strong communication skills are crucial for understanding cats’ needs and updating pet owners. These capabilities ensure the well-being of the cats, maintain clear client trust, and create a safe, welcoming boarding environment.

Job description

Associate Veterinarian (DVM) — San Antonio, TX
Veterinary Medical Center Northwest 1604 5010 N Loop 1604 W, San Antonio, TX 78249

Schedule: 4 days on / 3 days off | Rotating shifts (7 AM–4 PM or 9 AM–6 PM) & weekends (8 AM–5 PM) | $135,000+ DOE

Practice Medicine the Way It Should Be Practiced

Veterinary Medical Center Northwest 1604 is a brand-new, full-service small animal clinic on the fast-growing Northwest side of San Antonio — and we're looking for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine to grow with us from the ground up.

We combine modern diagnostics and comprehensive medical, surgical, and dental care with something that's become rare in veterinary medicine: real relationships with clients and their pets, and real work-life balance for our team. Our 4-on/3-off schedule means three full days off every single week, with predictable 9-hour shifts (7 AM–4 PM or 9 AM–6 PM on weekdays, 8 AM–5 PM on weekends) rotated fairly across the doctor team.

What You'll Do
  • Provide wellness and preventive care for dogs and cats at every life stage
  • Perform routine and soft-tissue surgery and dental procedures
  • Utilize modern in-house diagnostics to get answers quickly and guide treatment
  • Build lasting relationships with a loyal, growing client base
  • Play an active role in growing the practice — welcoming new patients, building your own clientele, and helping establish VMC1604 as the go‑to clinic in Northwest San Antonio
  • Help shape the culture and medical standards of a new practice — your voice matters here
Why VMC1604
  • 4 days on, 3 days off — three full days off, every week
  • Predictable 9-hour shifts — weekdays rotate between 7 AM–4 PM and 9 AM–6 PM; weekend shifts run 8 AM–5 PM
  • Rotating weekends shared equitably across the doctor team, so no one is stuck with every weekend
  • No overnights or on-call
  • Ground-floor opportunity — join a new clinic and play a hands‑on role in building our clientele and establishing new patients, growing a caseload that's truly yours while helping define how medicine is practiced here
  • Modern facility and equipment — practice the quality of medicine you were trained for
  • Supportive, tight-knit team — clients regularly tell us our staff feels like family
  • Full-service caseload variety — wellness, surgery, dentistry, diagnostics, and a unique dedicated cat boarding facility
  • San Antonio living — no state income tax, affordable cost of living, and one of the best food scenes in Texas
Compensation & Benefits
  • $135,000+ base salary, depending on experience
  • Paid time off in addition to your 3-day weekends
  • CE allowance and paid CE days
  • Licensure, DEA, and professional dues covered
  • Liability (PLIT) coverage
  • Employee pet care discounts
  • Relocation assistance considered for the right candidate
  • Details finalized during the offer process.
What We're Looking For
  • DVM/VMD from an AVMA-accredited program (or ECFVG/PAVE equivalent)
  • Active Texas veterinary license, or eligibility to obtain one
  • DEA registration (or eligibility)
  • Strong communication skills and a genuine love for client education
  • Comfortable with routine surgery and dentistry (mentorship available — new grads encouraged to apply)
  • A team player who wants to build something, not just clock in
