Cast Assistant information

How much does a cast assistant earn?

A cast assistant typically earns between $15 and $25 per hour, depending on experience, location, and the production size. Salaries can vary with union membership and the complexity of the production environment.

What is a cast assistant?

Cast Assistants are professionals who support actors and the casting department during film, television, or theater productions. Their responsibilities can include coordinating schedules, helping with costume fittings, ensuring cast members are present on set, and assisting with any needs the cast may have throughout the production. They play a crucial role in keeping the production organized and making sure everything runs smoothly for the actors and casting team. Cast Assistants often act as a liaison between the cast and the rest of the crew, helping to resolve any logistical issues that may arise.

How do you become a cast assistant?

To become a cast assistant, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and relevant experience in film or theater production. Skills in organization, communication, and familiarity with production equipment are important, and some roles may require knowledge of scheduling or casting software. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions can also improve chances of employment in this role.

What does a cast assistant do?

As a Cast Assistant, you play a vital role in ensuring that actors are prepared and present on set according to the shooting schedule. Daily tasks often include coordinating call times, assisting with wardrobe or script needs, and serving as a communication link between the cast and other departments such as makeup, costume, and production. You may also help maintain a smooth workflow by managing transportation and addressing last-minute requests from cast members or directors. This hands-on support helps the production stay on track and fosters a collaborative set environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cast assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cast Assistant, you need excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and a basic understanding of production workflows, often gained through on-set experience or relevant coursework. Familiarity with call sheets, scheduling software, and communication tools like walkie-talkies is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, and discretion help you manage cast needs and work seamlessly with production teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring smooth logistics, supporting cast members effectively, and maintaining a well-run set environment.

What is the difference between Cast Assistant vs Camera Assistant?

Required CredentialsBasic production training, sometimes a relevant degreeCamera operation courses, technical training, sometimes certifications
Work EnvironmentAssist actors and crew on set, often indoors or on locationWork closely with camera equipment, on set or in studio
