What is a cash manager?

A cash manager handles financial processes for a business or organization. Job duties include implementing monetary policies, overseeing payroll and cash flow operations, supervising junior accounting personnel, and assisting with annual audits. The qualifications for a career as a cash manager are a bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting, project management skills, and experience working on the financial side of a business. Some employers prefer candidates with a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Voluntary professional certifications from organizations like the Cash Management Association of the Americas are also available and may increase job prospects.

What are some common challenges faced by cash managers and how can they be addressed?

Cash Managers often deal with fluctuating cash flows, tight deadlines, and the need to forecast accurately despite market volatility. Managing liquidity while optimizing returns and maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements can be complex. Building strong relationships with banks, leveraging cash management software, and regularly reviewing cash positions can help Cash Managers anticipate and overcome these challenges. Open communication with accounting, treasury, and finance teams is also crucial for smooth operations.

  • Lead execution and oversight of same-day wires, ACH, and cross-border payments, ensuring proper controls and timely settlement
  • Oversee monthly restricted currency settlements and short-term funding, collaborating closely with Treasury, Accounting, and Tax
  • Drive cash reconciliations, month-end close activities, and treasury-related accounting entries to ensure accuracy and compliance
  • Act as the primary contact for global banking partners, managing relationships, resolving issues and negotiating service improvements.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to strengthen end-to-end cash processes and ensure compliance with treasury policies
  • Support internal and external audits, control testing, and regulatory reporting requirements

What you need to succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of professional experience in Corporate Treasury
  • Proven track record of leading process re-engineering or automation projects in a treasury or finance function (e.g., TMS implementation, workflow automation, straight-through processing improvements)
  • Strong knowledge of cash management, intercompany funding and dividends, foreign exchange operations, and treasury accounting
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat; experience with Treasury Management Systems (Kyriba and SAP preferred)
  • Highly organized with strong process rigor, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing priorities
